Can jConnect only be used through the httpd supplied with jConnect?

The Sample JDBC Applet that is found on the local home page for the
http-server supplied with jConnect works fine when used with this httpd
(but only for my local Sybase server). If I try to start the same applet
with appletviewer I get the following error message:

jans-sun:/progs/local/jConnect/sample> appletviewer gateway.html
java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: jdbc/sybase/utils/Debug
at Isql.init(Isql.java:198)
at sun.applet.AppletPanel.run(AppletPanel.java:273)
at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java)

To test the class with another httpd i tried using the JavaWebServer
httpd. To make the applet available to this httpd I copied the jConnect
classes subtree and the gateway.html to a catalog called test under the
rootcatalog for this httpd.This gives the following error in the
browser:

Applet can't start:error: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError

What am I doing wrong?
Can jConnect be used with servlets?

I have the following configuration:
SUN Solaris 2.5
Sybase System 11
JDK1.1_Final
jConnect 2.1

JAVA_HOME=/progs/local/jdk1.1
JDBC_HOME=/progs/local/jConnect
CLASSPATH=/progs/local/jConnect/classes:/progs/local/jConnect/sybjdbc.zip:/p
rogs/local/jdk1.1/lib/classes.zip:.
PATH=something:/progs/local/jdk1.1/bin:/progs/local/JSDK_Beta/bin:...etc...

To use jConnect with an appletviewer:

echo $JAVA_HOME
alder% /opt/java/jdk1.0.2

alder% echo $CLASSPATH
/web1/jdbc/classes:/opt/java/jdk1.0.2/lib/classes.zip:.

alder% $JAVA_HOME/bin/appletviewer alder.html

You do not need to use the cascade web server to access a jConnect
applet.
To use 0-install:

- Add $JDBC_HOME/classes as an alias directory within
your webserver configuration (this is any webserver)
- Place your applets in $JDBC_HOME/classes and set your
codebase in your applet tag to the alias you set up in
the prior step.
- If your SQL Server or SQL Anywhere is on a different
system than your webserver, then you will also need to
boot the cascade webserver and use the proxy property
for your applets.

-lance

To do 0-install client and use a different webserver other than
the one that we ship:
