I am running NT4.0 with Sybase 11. I am developing a intranet using the New
hahtsite web development software. Im also using IIS 3.0 as my web server.

My problem is when I make a ODBC connection through hahtsite and try to
display data in a webpage it takes almost 5 minutes for the page to
display. But when I preview the data in Hahtsite in a preview window it
takes less than 2 sec. I tried Intersolv's ODBC driver and the same effect
happpened.

I think this is a perfomance issue with sybase. Is there something I could
look at in sybase or NT to speed my access time up. Im just running a
simple query to return a couple a records but it looks like it parses
throught the whole database then dispalys the data.

any suggestions helpful

I don't do web design (yet??) so forgive my ignorance ...

You mention that the preview of your data through Hahtsite takes less
than 2 sec? Where is it getting the data from? If from Sybase ... then
you don't have a performance problem with Sybase.

Assuming I'm all wet, i.e., the 2 sec delay is *not* pulling data from
Sybase .... have you tried the following:

1) Type your 'simple' query into an isql window (or any window that
gives you a direct connect to Sybase) and see how long it takes for the
query to return your 'raw' data. Is it still slow? The idea here is to
find out if the query is slow or the connection between your web
software and the Sybase dataserver.

2) Assuming the query *does* run slow during a direct connect to the
Sybase dataserver ... do you know how to get a showplan for your query?
Or how to figure out if your query is using an index? (Nope, not trying
to talk down to ya ... just don't know what your level of T/SQL
experience is??). The idea here is to find out if you've got a 'simple'
problem such as an index not being used?

3) If you're not sure how to check the showplan on your query, or how to
determine if an index is being used ... have you talked with your DBA?
Hopefully your DBA is knowledgeable enough that he can show you this
info.

4) If you don't have any knowledgeable T/SQL folks around then perform
the following from within a direct connect to Sybase ...
- get a description of each table your query is accessing ('sp_help
<table_name>')
- get a showplan of your query ('set showplan on',
'go','<run_my_query>','go')
- get table sizes for each of your tables ('sp_spaceused <table_name>')

Now post the results of the 2 (above) steps along with your original
query here to the newsgroup. If there is a performance problem with
your query it could be any one of several issues. Short of having
someone come in (or dial in) to look at your dataserver and/or query ...
posting here is a good beginning.
