After following the steps for rebuilding the master device, I have one
issue that the manuals don't seem to address -- how to get the expanded
device size reported correctly.

After restoring my backup, the sysdevices entry for Master still reflected
the old size -- and 'disk reinit' and 'disk refit' don't seem to apply to
this problem.

My solution -- which apparently works -- was simply to update the 'high'
value for master in sysdevices to reflect the correct total (i.e., one less
than the total number of 2k pages on the expanded device).

Can anyone tell me if this is correct? Is there a better way?

As long as you ...

1) got the right value for 'high' (possibly from sysusages immediately
after you rebuilt the master device??)

and

2) rebooted the dataserver

... this should do.

One way to make sure you won't have any problems ... try allocating
any/all free master device space to a database and then run a full set
of database level DBCC's (checkdb, checkalloc, etc.). My only (minor)
concern is that you got the right value for 'high'.
