In the eval stages for adaptive server.... want to export data from mssql7
to sybase, but can not locate info on use of bulk copy or any import
utility. Eval is on NT4 platform; production would be on solaris, but not
interested in that info at this time. Anyone have knowledge of how to
proceed or where to find tutorials (the most recent texts I've found for
sybase are copyrighted 1996 - bad omen?)

There are many recent documents on my.sybase.com (a book for every issue
actually)

There are several ways to do this, providing your datatypes are
compatible(ie: varchar max on ASE is 255 etc see the docs for more)

Two easy ways to get from a to b are

DTS from SQL7 to Sybase, I have successfully created packages to migrate
data from SQL Server to ASE (cross platform is no problem since ODBC is the
middleman)

Bulk Copy out in character mode (-c) to a text file (if it is NT to NT just
Bulk Copy in, if you are moving to UNIX FTP the files in ASCII mode then
Bulk Copy in)

ie:

c:\MSSQL\BINN\bcp table.owner.table out -SSQLServer -Usa -Ppassword -c

if Sybase is > 12.0 && OS is NT

c:\%SYBASE%\%SYBASE_OCS%\BIN\bcp table.owner.table
out -SASE -Usa -Ppassword -c

if Sybase < 12 bcp is in %SYBASE%\BIN

if you are on UNIX and Sybase > 12.0

FTP to UNIX (you could use NFS Maestro, SAMBA(smbfs) or Sharity to mount
NTFS to UNIX UFS cross platform as well)
then

$SYBASE/$SYBASE_OCS/bin/bcp table.owner.table out -SASE -Usa -Ppassword -c

if Sybase < 12.0 then bcp is in $SYBASE/bin

There are also directconnect from Sybase to SQL Server and CIS or
Replication (these require other purchases)

HTH,
George Saylor

Decided to use MSSQL bcp instructions. Have the copy starting, but get the
following error message:

CSLIB Message: -L0/O0/S0/N36/1/0:
cs_convert: cslib user api layer: common library error: The result is
truncated because the conversion/operation resulted in overflow.

Does anyone know how this issue is addressed??
FWason@highground.com

Thanks!

are the schemas identical? If so are all datatypes portable?
