so native PDF generation is no longer in the next release?!
It is now in the 'future' category.
this is a huge negative.

dockable windows?

yes - i know that list well.

the difference is that native PDF generation was talked about as being
in 15 at the last techwave. now it is on the 'blue list' in futures
which indicates that is now considered 'additions to the plan'. so
apparently PDF generation was dropped soon after it was announced at
techwave?

dockable windows not even listed?

the slide is at 23:00

hanna has killed native PDF and dockable windows

I'm going back through previous references to the PB roadmap:

* http://www.sybase.com/files/Thankyou_Pages/RoadmapPowerBuilder.pdf
*
http://brucearmstrong.wordpress.com/2011/12/08/orange-county-sybase-user-group-meeting/#more-1301
*
http://brucearmstrong.wordpress.com/2011/09/13/tuesday-development-tools-plenary/#more-1085

And I don't see anything that indicates that native PDF generation was on
the list for PB15, just that it was something they were working on.

As for GUI updates for PB Classic, I imagine they weren't included on the
most recently slide just for brevity. Until I hear something definate
otherwise, I'd have to assume they're still in for PB15.

My general impression is that SAP is able to devote more developer
resources to PB than Sybase was, and as a result they were able to include
additional features in the roadmap than originally planned.

native pdf was definately talked about at techwave. i think dave fish
got applause when he talked about it. or at least i was clapping in my
head.

I don't know if it was on any slides - there was no demo of it.

i expect you are correct about gui updates in classic - they had a lot
of demo info and even articles about the doc windows and splitters.

i hope you are right about the developer resources.

Yes - and it was a HUGE applause! They MUST get PDF built into the PB 15
product. This is long over due.

No dockable windows? How can you be showing demos of this at TechWave and
Roadshows as the next big thing and then yank it? I hope it is only because
they have found technical problems and not because they have had a change of
mind.

I'm not at the point where I'm going to assume that the enhancements have
been removed just because they don't appear on the slide. I will ask about
it during the PBDC this week though. That should clarify it one way or the
other.

Hi Bruce;

Thanks for the updates!

I can't help but wondering though what he plan is for Cloud, Web and
Mobile sections from SAP versus Appeon which is already there. Is SAP
developing their own directions for these areas or just marketing PB in
light of Appeon capabilities?

Regards ... Chris

We (at PBDC) have learned that SAP dictates certain things when it comes
to announcing new features. I haven't seen anything yet that conflicts
with what I've heard previously. That leads me to believe that the
change in the message is due solely to the constraints that SAP mandate
that weren't in place before.

My main hope is that SAP is able to do away with the Sybase 85% Rule. That
is they develop new features until they are 85% of what is needed to make
them truly usable before they go on to something else and never go back and
fix the remaining issues that prevent the previous feature from being used.

As I read this I seemed to recall that native PDF generation has been
mooted for a long time but never delivered. I checked my old diary and
discovered I went to a Powerbuilder seminar in November 2008 where
(according to my notes) native PDF, not using Ghostscript, was mentioned
as getting included in an upcoming 11.5 version. I waited with
anticipation - I am still waiting.

Cheers

Hi Ben;

=> If I had asked people what they wanted

That was the whole problem with Sybase ... they *never* asked the
real PB developers what they needed and only implemented what Sybase
"thought" they wanted!

@ the conference nothing really new was discussed - in terms of PB
features/capabilities. This is an SAP thing.

After being in various conversations, i do think that PB's future is
now much much brighter than before SAP.

I think it's useless to ask for some new details about PB 15 beta
release date ... but are there any news?

It's nice to here some positive statements by SAP, but I missed a clear
line for PB.NET. Is it a dead end or will all enhancements available in
both environments? When is it full managed? How long is PB Classic
supported?

Thanks for posting the webinar link.
I'm keen to to see what comes of IDW5 and how the browser side and server
side will hang together. Hopefully we will be able to add code to both
client and server sides like the good old web datawindow component.
