Hello All,

I have searched for help on this problem to no avail so I am hoping I
missed something and someone here might be of some help. We have an
application developed in PB 10.2.1. We have found that in a grid style
datawindow, if the user sets the focus to a protected column or column
with a tab order of 0 and then deletes all the rows and then shift
+clicks in the now empty datawindow that the app will crash. We have
found this to be repeatable not only in our deployed application but
also in the IDE during a datawindow preview. This seems like such a
glaring error that we are surprised we can't find anything online
about it. We also have one copy of PB 11.5 we are migrating our app to
and this error is also repeatable in the PB 11.5 version of our app.

So, to go over this once more to make sure I'm being as clear as I
can:
1. Create a new grid style datawindow.
2. Set the tab order of a column to 0 or set the column's protected
property to true.
3. Retrieve any number of rows from the database.
4. Click inside any protected column and leave focus in that column.
4. Delete all the rows from the datawindow.
5. Now before doing anything else shift + click (left or right doesn't
appear to matter) in the now empty datawindow.
6. In our experience, PB crashes...everytime.

This behavior exists in both the IDE datawindow preview and the
deployed app.

We have demonstrated this behavior in both PB 10.2.1 and PB 11.5. We
develop and deploy on WinXP, SP3.

Thank you for taking time to read this and for any help you may offer.

Although this is probably a bug, surely this wouldnt be too much of an
issue for "normal" users. I would have to ask why a user would delete
all the rows then have the need to shift-click on an empty datawindow
control?

There's an old, old joke: a guy goes to the doctor and says "it hurts when I
raise my arm like this". The Doctor says "so don't raise your arm like
that". It's only a problem if there is some functionality that is routinely
invoked by shift-click - in which case you give them an alternative way to
invoke it. What we sometimes call a "training issue".

Hi there, I am so sorry for the delay in my response. This is my first
post to a google group and I was expecting to be notified of replies
via email. I just logged in to check this on a whim.

Thank you both for the responses and the time taken to reproduce the
issue. I have not reported this issue to Sybase for two reasons.

1. I was waiting to test with the latest build. Right now Sybase is
having a widespread problem with customers not being able to download
EBF's prior to 11.
2. We don't have support from Sybase so we didn't want to spend
$250.00 on a ticket for something that was
a.) patched in an EBF or
b.) a reported bug with an existing workaround.
My question here was to assist in answering b and we feel that a is
probably un-likely as it appears to exist in 11.5 too.

To answer your questions about why anyone would do this...I had the
same question. It turns out that part of the user's normal process is
to use shift+click to select all the detail rows for an invoice, then
delete them. They then add individual or groups of rows back to the
invoice as needed. Basically an overzealous user can inadvertantly
continue to hold shift through the whole process and then with one
click crash the datawindow engine dll. The problem, as you suggest, is
completely avoidable with simple user training. However, the problem
with just training the users is that it's still possible to crash the
app this way and we have noticed occaisionally that when this error
occurs some SQL statements aren't running which causes an
inconsistency in the database. We know what to look for when it
happens, and we have scripts to correct it, but this is used in our
invoicing process and therefore it's vital that it doesn't crash like
this.

I am not overly thrilled to find this bug so far into powerbuilder's
life, I'm guessing someone has reported this before but it's just too
infrequent to address right now. Would you suggest I report this to
Sybase? I don't have any experience reporting bugs to them, is there
a fee to open the case?

Here is how (and why) we worked around this:

1. remove protection from all columns that were always protected.
2. move all computed columns into the SELECT statement for the
datawindow so they are created as editable columns.
3. modify the itemchanged event of the window to check for a row level
edit mode variable (already existed) and conditionally allow or reject
changes based on column number.

I have done this and tested it and it does get around the problem as
it appears the bug is dependent on a protected column having focus
prior to the row being deleted.

P.S After more testing it seems that deleting ALL the rows isn't
necessary to create this behavior.
