Has anyone had a problem on a NT 4.0 server with running httpd
and the occasional jCONNECT app crashing the java.exe?

I have a number of students doing this and I'm at a loss to
determine its cause, because it's very random and doesn't leave
any error messages.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A student managed to find an error which causes the java.exe program
to crash on NT. This is strictly a coding error on the students part,
but does in fact kill the server.

He had a EXEC QUERY FOR UPDATE executing instead of a EXEC UPDATE
FOR UPDATE. When he hit this statement, java.exe crashed.

I imagine that this type of behavior should be picked up in the server
in some way.

I have seen java.exe crash while trying to call
Exception.printStackTrace()
on an exception which has been thrown from an "obfuscated" class.
The TDS package of the jConnect driver has been obfuscated, and
SQL Exceptions which originate on the SQL-Server (the syntax error
you mention below would cause this) are thrown from the TDS layer.

I believe that this JavaVM bug has been fixed in the JDK1.1 release,
I have not been seeing any problems like you describe on my NT 4.0
w/JDK1.1.
