I have jConnect running on our webserver (Irix 6.3) and am trying to
connect to a
Sybase server running on a hpux 10.20. I have written a small applet
that does a
simple select. The applet runs fine locally under appletviewer (running
on the Irix box)
but fails when I attempt to run it through the browser using the
webserver. Here is the
message:

# Security Exception: Couldn't connect to <sgi1.srp.gov> with origin
from <local-classpath-classes>.
# Applet exception: security.Couldn't connect to <sgi1.srp.gov> with
origin from <local-classpath-classes>.
netscape.security.AppletSecurityException: security.Couldn't connect to
<sgi1.srp.gov> with origin from <local-classpath-classes>.

****sgi1.srp.gov is the webserver(148.126.9.36)****

The applet class is in the jConnect classes directory.
I've got all the ports down OK.
Both servers are inside the firewall.
Why won't it behave? Any help would be appreciated. Below is the
"source" of the problems.
For the most part, it is the Isql example with some modifications.

.....
public void start() {
urlBase = "jdbc:sybase:Tds:";
host = "148.126.17.18:2500";
usedb = "mn1ptrk0";
query = "select * from mn1ptrk0..tptrk";
proxy = "148.126.9.36:8800";
displayMsg("Trying to connect to: " + url);
timeout = 10;
try {
Properties info = new Properties();
info.put("user", "$%&^");
info.put("password", "@#$%@$#%");
info.put("proxy", proxy);
DriverManager.setLoginTimeout(timeout);
_con = DriverManager.getConnection(urlBase + host, info);
_stmt = _con.createStatement();

}
catch (SQLException sqle) {
displayMsg(sqle.toString() + " Restart connection.");
}
catch (Exception e) {
catchEx(e);
}
try {
_stmt.setQueryTimeout(timeout);
displayMsg("Going to database: " + usedb);
boolean restype = _stmt.execute("use " + usedb);
if (restype) {
displayMsg("Unexpected results from USE");
_stmt.cancel();
}
}
catch (SQLException sqle) {
catchSQLEx(sqle);
}
catch (Exception e) {
catchEx(e);
}
}

John,

does the sample applet (sample/gateway.html) work for you?

What version of netscape are you using?

This may be a dumb question, but the proxy entry, is it pointing
to the cascade webserver and is the cascade webserver on the same
box that your main webserver is located.

Well, the sample/gateway.html works, the cascade webserver is on the
webserver, and (go figure) the applet works under Netscape 3.01. I was
using Communicator. I went ahead and tested on IE and had problems
there as well. Is there a known problem/fix for Communicator? Thanks,

John Henkel

John, there have been two other postings regarding communicator
problems... I have not downloaded communicator yet and will
probably not get to it until next week. Have you chatted at
all with netscape about changes or known problems?

Communicator 4.0 is reading the CLASSPATH environment variable on the
local machine where it is running. If your CLASSPATH contains the
directory information for the jconnect classes, then you will get the
Security Exception: Couldn't connect to <> with origin from
<local-classpath-classes>. So remove the path for jconnect classes from
your CLASSPATH, then communicator will work fine.

This is what I have found out on my NT machine. However I don't know why
the classpath conflicts with Communicator. I am sure this is a bug in
Netscape or problem in jConnect. Lance may be the right person to tell
us.
