Calling jdbcCompliant() on com.sybase.jdbc.SybDriver on both the July
16th release and beta 3.0 returns false. I thought that this driver is
supposed to be jdbc compliant? I'm told by Borland that this is why it
isn't fully supported within JBuilder. They say that it doesn't fully
support MetaData accessors. Is this true? Connect Software's
FastForward (www.connectsw.com) release 2.9 is a jdbc compliant type IV
driver alternative and does work properly within JBuilder.

Does anyone know when jConnect will be jdbc compliant?

Regards,
Chris

Chris,

We are in the process of providing the rest of the Database
Metadata methods that are missing (currently only the methods
which return ResultSets are missing)

We hope to provide this shortly and by the time 3.0 driver
ships I would expect this task to be completed.

If you have noticed, each time we have pushed out a new demo version
of the driver, we have been including more functionality as
well as bug fixes.

I am not familiar with jBuilder, but if you are aware of the
type of data that you are accessing, the lack of these methods
should have a minimal impact.

We have customers successfully using a wide range of java development
tools with jConnect.

Regards,

-Lance

Chris,
I urge you not to make too much of the 'jdbcCompliant()' method
on java.sql.Driver. We currently have that method return 'false' for
jConnect on the basis that there are a handful of tests in the
"JDBC Compliance" test suite which JavaSoft and Intersolve developed
together based on the JDBC/ODBC bridge. There is no actual compliance
testing program that I am aware of yet -- so the value that
jdbcCompliant() returns is not terribly meaningful.

The jConnect 2.2 maintenance release should be available sometime
in September, and that release will be as close as jConnect may
ever come to passing ALL the compliance tests. There are some
methods in ResultSetMetaData which would require JDBC drivers
to parse the SQL contained in SELECT statements and access MetaData
from the server to find out -- what table a column came from,
whether the current user has update priviledge for it, etc. The
performance consequence of doing that would be ridiculous, and
we do not intend to try to support some of those methods.

Final release dates for the 3.0 driver have not been set in stone
yet. I suspect it will be generally available sometime in November,
but I cannot give you a firm commitment there. If you are looking
for a version of jConnect that returns "true" for jdbcCompliant,
you might try subclassing com.sybase.jdbc.SybDriver and overriding
that method ;-)

Thank you. We have worked out the issues with Borland's JBuilder and
jConnect. The July 16th release of jConnect fixes the MetaData problems
that we were having.

Chris
