Hi,

The IsqlApp works fine with my database.

I tried the Sample Isql Applet, but I get the error message :
"Unexpected Exception: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: port out
range:-1"

Afterwards I tried the adapt the Isql applet that it connect to my
database. There
I got a lot of trouble, because I don't know how to force the netscape
comunicator
to load the sybDriver from my web Server.
If I have a CLASSPATH the browser loads the local SybDriver and then I
cannot connect to my server.
If I have no CLASSPATH the browser does not find the SybDriver.

What I have to do to get a connection to the DB out of my browser ?

Server Win NT 4.0
PC Win95
Netscape Communicator
JConnect3.0Beta
Open Server Gateway
DB Sql Anywhere 5.5.01

Thanks

Walter Meerwein

I hate to do a me-too posting, but I have some additional detail that
might help getting the isql applet to work. I have done extensive
testing and this is what I got (after modifiying for my database -
sybase system 11 on a sparc-1000 running solaris):

(1) isql applet works OK with the JDK's 1.1.2 appletviewer.
(2) it also works OK on Symantec's Visual Cafe Pro 1.0d (using the 1.1.2
JDK classes), in Debug mode only. I think VC Pro has trouble with
running 1.1.2 JDK classes in "execute mode".
(3) it also works OK on Netscape Navigator 3.01 and 3.0 gold
(4) it does not work at all with Netscape Communicator (4.0) and
Internet Explorer 4.0 preview-2. In Communicator I get the error:
"Unexpected exception: netscape.security.AppletSecurityException:
security. Couldn't connect to <my server> with origin from
<local-classpath-classes>.

My suspicion is that there is some additional security implemented by
the new browsers that the old ones didn't and that the JDK doesn't.
Even though we are running the java applet from a local drive!!!

Perhaps there is some special code or some special browser configuration
that is needed.

I have not attempted yet to put the applet on a web server and try it
that way.

Any suggestions on how to get around the new browsers limitation would
be greatly welcome.

Bruno-

This is just a VERY annoying bug in Communicator, where Communicator
favors the local CLASSPATH over the CODEBASE. Reset you CLASSPATH to
empty, then try Communicator again. Communicator is loading the local
SybDriver.class, then try to connect to a server which is NOT localhost,
and hence throws the SecurityException.

set CLASSPATH=""

Thanks for your answer, that should help me once I deploy an applet on a
Web server.

Do you have any suggestions as far as running it from the local drive?
It would be nice during development. Is it even possible? In the case
of the Isql Applet I was trying to load it as
"ftp://<path-here>/applet/isql.html".

thanks,

bruno
