I have just commenced a new job at a leading medical research institute
in Australia. I will be creating Java applets and applications for the
garvan with tools (Visual Cafe for Mac) and hardware (Power Mac running
Mac OS 8) they provide.

They wish to connect to thier Sybase databases and so I wish to look at
Sybase's JConnect.

I have downloaded the jconnect.class from Sybase and do not know how to
run the jconnect.class through the java VM so that I can extract the
appropriate classes to add the JDBC extensions. The installation
intructions give command line arguments and environment settings
relating to Win95/NT and UNIX platforms. I do not know the Mac
equivalent

Any jconnect users successfully using it on MacOS and Visual Cafe?

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Jim Cotsios

I'm still trying to install jconnect on the Mac OS.

I installed MSJ 1.5 and the MSJ 1.5 sdk and tried to use JBindery to
run jConnect.class through the MSJ vm... but to no avail. I get the
following log:
___________________________
Packed using jinstall v0.4 (http://www.sbktech.org)
Package : jConnect (TM) for JDBC (TM)
Version : jConnect/2.0/Trial Version/JDK11
Unable to open myself??jConnect.class
Make sure installation class is present in the current directory
**ERROR failed to install
----------------------------------
I specify jConnect as the Class Name. Is this wrong?

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Jim

Hi,

I have tried the JBinery also with no luck. I originally got the error
you reported, but after moving the JConnect.class to the same folder as
JBindery, I am unable to give it the "stdin" input for the folder to
install the product
into.

I have found another way to get this to work, you will need:

- Sun's JDK 1.0.2 for Macintosh
- ResEdit utility

1) Open jConnect.class in ResEdit
2) It will mention that the file does not have a resource fork and will
ask
if it is ok to create one. Click 'OK'
3) Select the menu option "File->Get Info for jConnect.class"
4) Change the Creator from '????' to 'Javr' (this is case sensitive)
5) Close the "Info" window.
6) Close jConnect.class window, Save your changes when prompted.
7) Move jConnect.class into the same folder as "Java Runner" which
is located in the "JDK 1.0.2:Standalone Apps:" folder.
8) Drag jConnect.class on top of "Java Runner".
9) Click "OK" for the "Enter command line arguments" window.
10) Enter the "Install to folder name" in the "Enter command line for
stdin"
window. Click "OK"
11) Click "OK" again. (this acts like a Carriage Return/Newline)
12) Now the jConnect.class is being expanded.
13) Enter "X" for the "Enter command line for stdin". Click "OK"
14) Click "OK" again.
15) This will exit the "Java Runner"

Hope this helps,

-Carl

Make sure the file itself is also called "jConnect.class" (case
sensitive!)

I hope this helps..
