What is the difference between JConnect and JDBCConnect - and which
would be better for a jBuilder applet running on the same machine as the
web server and SQL anywhere?

Actually there is not JDBCConnect, that was unfortunately a name that
stuckwith the Sybase jConnect product during pre-GA. jConnect should
work for you.
