Can we use jConnect to directly get to DirectCONNECT gateway without
using OmniCONNECT? If so, what driver -- com.sybase.jdbc.Sybdriver?

Yes this should work and the driver is the same..

keep in mind that we currently do not provide scripts
for the other vendors (Oracle, Informix, DB2...etc) so, that
will prevent the use of DatabaseMetaData methods.

We hope to have these available sometime in the future.
