HI,
I have created a form that has checkboxes on it. Upon submit I build an
sql query based on the input from the form.. Now I know if they mark any
of the 5 checkboxes it sets that value to "ON". What I want to know is
how to I then access that value if it is set to "ON".
I thought that if I did and if stmt.
If Rejected = 1 (or true) {
statstring = "R"
}

It goes into this stmt regardless if I checked it or not.
I have also changed it to say IF Rejected = "ON" and it still goes into
the if stmt
even if it is not checked. I am sure that this is a basic problem, but
I don't know what the problem is with it.
Thanks much
samantha

You need to use "==" instead of "=". You are performing an
assignment which is always true.

Carson,
ok now I am using if new_one == "on"   (dumb mistake i know)

The only problem now is I had to declare them all as document.values.  This only becomes a problem if the checkbox is not selected.  If a certain box is not checked I get undefined variable document.value.new_one[new_one] near line...etc

How do I get around it.

That's correct. You will have to perform an exists() beforehand.

Carson,
I am unfamiliar with "exists"
I found in the book where it says it checks to see if a var has been assigned a value without creating an instance of it.
by showing
If (exists (session.logon)) ....

What do I use..
I tried If (exists ( var name)) no
I also tried If (exists (session.varname)) no

Im still missing it
thanks
samantha

I use the exists() function all over the place. It is wonderful for making
generic scripts that can accept any number of parameters on the URL. All I
do is check for it:
if (exists(document.value.ExpectedParam))
Then I process the true and false logic accordingly. Actually, if I don't
want all that I just do an assignment at the beginning of the script:
var myParam1 =
(exists(document.value.ExpectedParam1)?document.value.ExpectedParam1:"");
Repeat this for each parameter you expect to find. Now in your code you
just do:
if (myParam1 != "")
That should take care of everything for you.
