I am trying to decide which route to take to quickly convert our
PowerBuilder app. to Web Base app. Using EA Server I see I can go HTML
DTC or with Java Applet. I like the Applet idea because I can simulate
our current GUI and it now has the Datawindow and interfacing with
Jaguar should be easy. On the other hand, pure HTML will probably be
thinner, but truly understanding the processing and use of the HTML DTC,
CORBA and design issues concerns me. What is the best way to proceed,
for a quick conversion or for long term success.

Hey Jay,

We originally went down the applet path and I have to agree with Ken, front
end applets are too slow to be practical... even with a high speed line they
seem to drag, out in the field they were be unbearable. I suggest building a
test applet (with a datawindow) and decide for yourself if the response time
is acceptable or not... my guess is, it won't be.

The good news is, we've been able to do most of the things we need to using
the HTML/JavaScript/CORBA approach. So far, the users have been really
pleased.

Good luck.

I agree 100%. When I show people client-side scripting and some JS stuff,
they are amazed it all starts with a datawindow!

P.S. We never use the DTC either, rather, we "roll our own" using the
supplied html web component .pbl. Definitely the way to go because it is
fully customizable.

You get the source code for the HTMLGenerator component when you install the
PB examples. Check out pbdwrt.pbl. You can use that as a starting point to
build your own component or start from scratch. Check out the link below, I
just put an article out there on building your own web datawindow component.
It should explain some of the workings of the datawindow.

I missed out something....
Since current HTML dw lacks quite a number of features,
is there a possibilities of releasing a XML DW which I believe
it can be implemented in a richer fashion.

Hi Jay,

We have found that using applets simply took too long to download and are
successfully using HTML(and Javascript) for all front end web development.
