Hello, Everyone,
I looked at the srv.log file after an unsuccesful attemp to start
the Jaguar server, I found that the file ended with this two lines:

Mar 26 00:52:18 2000: Loading: E:\Program Files\Sybase\Jaguar CTS
3.0\java\classes\surfsidevideo\CleanupServiceImpl.class
Mar 26 00:52:19 2000: Loading: E:\Program Files\Sybase\Jaguar CTS
3.0\java\classes\surfsidevideo\_sk_SurfSideVideoPJ_CleanupService.class

and I did not see any other errors. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks, Carson. Is the file already there when Jag is installed or is it
created after the Jag server is started the first time? How come I can start
the server for the first or two times without causing a Dr. Watson? Thanks
again.

Ben,

You will find the line in the server subdirectory of the repository. Just
remove the entries from the file, don't delete the line.

Thanks, Scott. So I just put a # sign in front of the line? What would happen if
I remove it as Carson suggested?

Ben,

No, make it so the entry reads:

com.sybase.jaguar.server.services=

I have never tried removing the property line.

Thanks to both Carson and Scott! I just shut down my Jag server and retarted it
after putting back that line and removing the value part only. I did not
encounter a Dr. Watson this time. I will post any more of this error if I
encounter it later. Thanks again.

Thanks to both Carson and Scott! I just shut down my Jag server and
retarted it
after putting back that line and removing the value part only. I did not

encounter a Dr. Watson this time. I will post any more of this error if
I
encounter it later. Thanks again.

Ben

Thanks again, Scott. I was trying to look for some explanations on my problem in
the Jag docs but could not find any. Could you please tell me why that line
would cause a Dr. Watson error when I started Jag server the second or third
time but usually not the first time? This morning I removed the line before I
read your message and it works OK and I can deploy my PB Jag component and
access it from a client. I am going to try to put that line back but only remove
the value part and see how it works. Thanks.

Ben,

Don't know. The server may have been picking up the wrong version of the
service class.

Yeah, that's pretty strange. It should have DW'ed the server every
time. Let us know if it comes back...

Ben,

The answer is long winded but here we go since I've never really explained
htis one.

That line is related to the SurfsideVideo sample program. Its starts a
service component named "CleanupService". That component wakes up every
hour and makes an intercomponent call to another component named "Cleanup".
If you change the jagadmin password, the CleanupService will cause EAS to
crash when it makes the inter-component call. The reason takes some
background.

I wrote that sample using the PowerJ InitialContext object in 3.0. There
was a bug in 3.0GA that prevented inter-component calls from services
working properly so I coded it like a client call not an intercomponent
call. I therefore specificed the username and password and didnt check off
to use the internal session. Now that all worked fine and dandy until you
change the jagadmin password. Then blammo it cant make the intercomponent
call and crashes. Still you may ask why the crash. So we dig further. IE
(yes the browser, stick with me) has a bug where it wont let you open
sockets in init() on the class thread. So the InitialContext object when it
cannot connect thinks whoa, maybe Im in IE and spawns a thread. It then
tries to connect form the thread, to work around the weird IE bug. Ok back
to inside EAS now. When you changed the password the inter-component call
failed, and the InitialContext spawned a thread and tried the call on the
thread. We dont support that and the server would crash.

Sooooo, although weird, in short it was a bug in my code. SInce then we
have fixed 1) The problem with inter-component calls from service threads,
2) Added a property to support inter-component calls on threads, and 3)
fixed the InitialContext so it wont spawn threads when its inside of EAS.

Too much informaiton? <g>

Thanks! Did you mean I should remove this whole line from the Jaguar.props
file? Shall I do this for the Jaguar.props files in both the server and
package folders? After I get the Dr. Watson error, I have to reinstall
Jaguar CTS in order to start the server again for just one or two times.
Then I get the error again. Thanks.
