Greetings Everyone,

We need to make some important decisions regarding a new development project
within our company. I want to create a new web site using Powerbuilder's
Powersite, HTML datawindows and Jaguar Server. One of our business partners
is advising against it suggesting that he attended a Sybase Seminar in New
York on Tuesday, March 14, 2000, and that he was advised to use Java instead
of the HTML datawindows when creating a web-based application.

I am dissappointed at hearing this, and hope that someone can point me to
some Sybase success stories where HTML datawindows are used in
proliferation. The only one that I have found in this news group is:
http://www.eappraiseit.com/. I checked it out, but it doesn't seem to have
a lot of meat on this side of the login prompt.

Thanks in advance.

I just was at the WhistleStop in Chicago and the message was not to switch
everything to EJB and JSP. It was simply showing that Sybase is continuing
to stay with the newest technologies and make it available in EAS. If you
switch your development direction every time the industry has a new
direction, you'll never get anything done<g>.

With that said, the current web datawindow technology works fine and you
can build production sites with it. I'm not saying it's the answer to
everything, however, if you have an existing PB application and want to move
it to the web, it can certainly help get you there. I will be able to
provide a public URL in the near future of a large site with mostly web
datawindow technology that shows the power of the web datawindow and EAS.
I'll pass it along when I can make it available.

I work for a large bank that is also using the HTML datawindow for several
web projects, a couple of which will be going to production within the next
week. These are global intranet sites so they are not readily accessable to
the general public. We experimented with using Java applets but found them
to take too long to download to the client. We have produced a very
acceptable web site using the HTML datawindow. The only major complaint I
have right now is that our freeform dw's do not format properly in Netscape,
thus our users are forced to us IE browser. Other than that, this tool has
given us some amazing flexability to move some existing PB apps to the web
much faster that we could have done if we had to re-write them in Java.

Yes the http://www.eappraiseit.com/ does not seem to be a good example. I
am at a consultant at a large corp. that uses the HTMLDW. We have two
applications using the HTMLDW. I see no reason to replace it with Java.
There may be some advantages to JSP down the road but it's not here yet. The
HTMLDW does most things we need. I think if Sybase does not enhance this
that we may have to look at others tools. The HTMLDW NEEDS to give more
control over style sheet generation. (Have I mentioned that enough here!).
These are extranet sites for now so you can't see them.
I attended the same seminar in Chicago on the 16th.
