Hi,

We use Infomaker 4.0.06 and 5.0.03 here to access Oracle databases ranging
from 7.1 to 7.3. Whenever the DBA upgrades an older database the rule based
oracle optimizer gets changed to cost based and some tables get analized
for statistics. After that IM goes into super slow mo until we drop stats
on all the objects. Anyone see this affect or have infomation as to why
such an adverse reaction to the cost base optimizer.

thank you,
Darwin H Webb

The DBA should add the following parameter to his startup file initXXXX.ora
to ensure the database starts in rule-based mode: optimizer_mode = rule
Oracle recommends using the cost-based optimizer, claiming they will drop
support for the rule-based optimizer ina future version.

Hi Terry,
Thank you for the reply, but do you know why Infomaker does not work in
cost base mode?

thank you,
Darwin

It's a bug in IM. IM strips out the hints, since it thinks they are
comments. I don't know when that will be fixed.

Hi Terry,

I'll try one more time. I click on the Infomaker graphic tables and submit
a report.
The Oracle rdbms has cost based optimizer analize statistics for the
objects. Infomaker goes into slow motion until all statisics are dropped..
Why?
O71-O73

There is no SQL tweeking or oracle hints defined.

thank you,
Darwin

Terry, I see the hints in the trace using the report painter in 5.0.03,
5.0.04 and 6.0.00.

SELECT /*+ rowid */ emp_fname FROM employee (0 MilliSeconds)
DESCRIBE: (10 MilliSeconds)
name=emp_fname,len=21,type=CHAR,pbt1,dbt1,ct0,dec0
BIND SELECT OUTPUT BUFFER (DataWindow): (0 MilliSeconds)

Am I missing something? It does not work in embedded sql which is not
an issue for Infomaker users.
