Can you give me the pros and cons of using retrieval arguments vs.
prompting for criteria.? I want my end user to be able to enter data to
limit the selection, but don't know which method is better to use?

I'm using Infomaker 6.0.

Retrieval arguments are more restrictive. They are built directly into the
SQL SELECT statement that you are building, e.g.
select * from my_table
where my_col = :my_arg.
The user is required to enter values for all retrieval arguments.

A prompt for criteria allows the user to selectively enter parameters. If
you define edit-styles for the specific columns (.e.g. a dropdown list) they
will be available to the user. The down side is that the user can choose
to leave columns blank, and thus create potentially run-away queries.

Both approaches are valid. You probably want to use a combination of both
methods, depending on the reports. Personally I hardly ever use prompt for
criteria.
