Is there anyway to allow a retrieval argument to be null or blank? I
have found that I can type "null" in a numeric field, but leaving a
string argument blank results in a message box coming back saying I need
to fill it in. Of course, typing in null will convert it to "null".
Any suggestions?

No. Either use 'prompt for criteria' instead of retrieval arguments or
change your Select to be something like:

select * from my_table
where ( my_col = :the_arg or 'x' = :the_arg)

allowing you to use x as value of the retrieval argument when you don't want
to supply a real value.
