I am using IM 6.5 with ASA 6.01. I have a database with three tables in
it . One table has 600 records, the second 450,000 records, and the
third 550,000. When I try to create a report using the first and third
tables, IM 6.5 locks up on me every time. The client is Windows 95 and
the server is NetWare 4.11 with all the latest patches. Does anyone have
a solution?

Thanks,

Bill Chadbourne

Can you be a bit more specific. Does your IM freeze, or do you get a GPF.
What does the query look like? Are you trying to retrieve all 550000 rows
into memory? I routinely run reports against tables with 5 million rows,
joined to 10 different tables and it works just fine.

The first table is the STAFF table and the other is the open accounts
receivable file. All I want is to get a staff number and the amount that staff
number billed so the query looks like this

SELECT a.staff, SUM(amount) AS total
FROM staff a, arall b
WHERE a.staff = b.staff
AND postdate BETWEEN '1998-07-01' AND '1998-12-31'
GROUP BY a.staff
ORDER BY a.staff

I then go to the preview area and the screen locks. I know this because I
can't cancel, minimize, etc.

Thanks

Put a trace on your session. In the DBMS field in your db-profile you can
add the word trace, so it reads like: 'trace ODBC'. This will generate a
logfile showing the exact sql IM is generating, time spent doing certain
operations and the actual data being retrieved.
On a side note: generally you don't have to use an ORDER BY clause when you
already have a GROUP BY clause. The GROUP BY will do an implicit sort.

Most likely you are doing a full table scan, because of the
postdate BETWEEN '1998-07-01' AND '1998-12-31'
clause. Try to use an explain plan to see what the optimizer is trying to
do.

Thanks for the quick response. Being that I am a new user of IM, can you tell me
what an explain plan is and how to implement one?

Thanks,

Bill Chadbourne

It is database dependent. In Oracle you would the SQL command EXPLAIN PLAN.
When you use SQLAnywhere, you can use the Database painter. In the db
painter write your select statement, e.g.: select * from customer where id =
200. Don't execute the statement, but use 'Design, Explain SQL'. It will
show you how the optimizer would execute the select statement. Sometimes
it can be difficult to make sense of what the optimizer is trying to tell
you. You need to experiment with different selects to get a feel for it.
