How can I increase the width of a computed field in a column, without
increasing the width of the column?

I don't understand what you are trying to achieve. The computed column
will take up as much space as required. If that is more than the width of
the column, it will get truncated. You can change the display format and
alignment if required. In preview mode you can resize each individual
column manually.

I think he ment in case of creating a title for example, you would not
want to restrict the size of the title to the column width. In the
properties dialog for the field, you would want to bring that field to
the foreground instead of basing it on the band. This would allow him
to stretch the field across columns.

The first column in my crosstab is employee (break1). I want to place the
employee number and name in the group header 1 instead, and hide column 1.
The problem is that the computed field in the group header has to stretch
over at least three columns. If I try to put it forground or background, it
doesn't work as a group header...

Why don't you create a computed column on the crosstab properties sheet
that contains both employee number and name. You are not limited to just
actual columns. Just doubleclick on the column and you will get the
'Modify Expression' screen.
