I installed 11.02 and applied the 11.03 maintenance patch to my test
server, and everything worked. Then I went to apply the EBF7571 and
when I went to restart either the SQL Server or the Backup server I
received an error message that it was looking for MSVCRT.DLL and could
not find it in the path. I thought that the MS Visual C++ DLL always
had a version in the name. That was what was in the directory
(MSVCRT20.DLL, MSVCRT40.DLL). So, I have had to remove that EBF. Any
ideas on what I can do to apply this update.

Hi Mark,

What has happened is some of the functionality that used to be in
MSVCRT40.DLL has been split out into MSVCRT.DLL. MSVCRT40.DLL is now
just a 'forwarder' or 'wrapper' whose functions call into MSVCRT.DLL. NT
4 comes with msvcrt.dll by default, but I guess NT 3.51 doesn't.

So there are 2 possible versions of msvcrt40.dll, an older one that
contains everything and a later one that relies on the existance of
msvcrt.dll. I would expect the later version to be smaller, since most
of its functionality is now in msvcrt.dll.

What I suspect is happening is the EBF is installing the later
msvcrt40.dll, but not msvcrt.dll. If this is the case then a possible
fix would be to save the older version of msvcrt40.dll that already
exists in your system before installing the EBF, then copy it back
afterwards.

An alternative fix would be to locate msvcrt.dll, maybe from an NT4 box,
and copy it.

I hope this makes sense. Please let me know if this fixes the problem as
I will need to write a technical note on it for future reference.

cheers,
tonyi
