We already have customers using jConnect with OS/2. jConnect is 100%
java so it will run wherever there is a JVM

I have successfully installed jConnect in OS/2 and have been doing
development and testing in both OS/2 and NT. If you have any problems,
let me know, and I'll try to help. It really didn't take much to use it
in OS/2, although I think I had to change a configuration file
(www.dos?) to run the cascade gateway demo, besides renaming the .BAT
file to a .CMD file.

If you have problems with the online install, download the jar file and
install directly from the command line as described in the installation
docs. I had to do that with an older version of Netscape Navigator for
OS/2, although I think you'd be all right with the current one.

Thanks in advance, a couple of questions - which version of JDK are you
using, and where can I get JRE? We have a java application, JDK 1.1.5, and
currently run it under JRE 1.1.5 on our Windows 95/NT platforms. If
possible, I'd like to get JRE 1.1.5 for OS/2.

I just saw that there is a public "preview" version of the Java 1.1.7 available
for OS/2. I don't know if you'd be interested in that or not. If you're
planning on moving your windows stuff to that platform, and you're interested
in keeping OS/2 at the same level, see:

http://www.software.ibm.com/os/warp/downloads/java/index.html

In the past, a public preview like this has sometimes preceded a production
version by a month or so...

You'll have to go to 1.1.6 under OS/2. Go to the following URL:

http://ncc.hursley.ibm.com/javainfo/hurindex.html

You need to register to get to the download area. (Registration is free.) IBM
doesn't include the runtime software with the JDK, so if you want to use the
JDK, be sure to download the JRE and install it first. It's a good idea to
follow the "fixes" link and get the latest patches. You should also be up to
date on OS/2 FixPaks -- go to:

ftp://service.boulder.ibm.com/ps/products/os2/fixes/v4warp/english-us/

(I assume you're using Warp 4. It's supposed to work under Warp 3, if you have
the latest FixPaks for that, but I haven't tried that.)

The installation is done through the OS/2 Feature Installer, which is a browser
plug-in. You can use it with either Netscape Navigator 2.02 for OS/2 or
Netscape Communicator 4.04 for OS/2. Both browsers and the installer are
available free from the IBM Software Choice Catalog at:

http://service.boulder.ibm.com/asd-bin/doc/en_us/catalog.htm

If you're starting from ground zero, that's a lot of downloads. Unless you
have a T1 line, you might want to set up a few FTP-PM sessions to run overnight
(with confirmations toggled off and binary toggled on)...

By the way, you might be pleasantly surprised when you run Java under OS/2. In
my experience, it's faster and more stable than under Windows. And when I
compared run times for simple programs to run big queries format the results,
and write them to a disk file -- the jConnect/Java benchmarks were actually
slightly faster than native code using Sybase Open Client Services.
