Hi Peter,

Not sure what you mean when you say your help doesn't shut down..could you
be more specific please?

As for .chm files, PB uses them fine. We're using them different from the
way I think you want to use them..We're using PFC and just use the
of_sethelpfile pointing to the .chm file to get our RoboHelp .chm file to be
used.

HTH

I'm not sure if that' happens in our with our .chm file. I'll have to give

Peter,

I gave up and opened a case. The problem seems to be if your help file is a
.chm - it's compiled help but a .hlp file closes with the app just fine. I
tested it on my app and that's the case. My tech person is hopefully
sending me code on what I can do to find the existence of my help system
before I close my app.

If it helps, I"ll let you know

We are using .chm (html-help) under Win2K, Help window closes together with
the app. Most likely there is a problem with how (and where) you are
calling ShowHelp

Phillip,

That's just it. In my case I don't use showhelp..I'm using pfc's
of_sethelpfile in the constructor event of our app manager. I don't have
any other code added for the help. Just setting it where it is was enough
to show it wherever.

The only noticeable difference between the way PFC calls ShowHelp and ours
is that fact that we do not try to assign the return code from the call to
ShowHelp, i.e. all PFC scripts do RETURN ShowHelp(...) and all this is
propagated thru the message router, we just do ShowHelp(...)

Hey Peter,

Yup, happens to me too :-)...That's not good...Maybe need to check the docs
about putting online help in a PB app and see if there's anything specific
in there.

If I find something, I'll let you know ..In the meantime

Gurus - any command we can use to keep this from happening? I"m using pfc's
of_sethelpfile to access our .chmfile

Peter,

The problem I'm having is PFC apparently doesn't know to close a help file
with a .chm extenstion. A .hlp file it can do..What I'd have to do is use
windows api calls to find the window and then make it close. I'm just
checking on a couple of questions I still had since I really haven't used
any of the windows API functions before.

The functions I"m supposed to use are:

Evita, this is from MSDN:
The fundamental feature of the HTML Help API is the help window. Through
the API commands, you can create a help window that hosts a Microsoft
Internet Explorer DLL (Shdocvw.dll) and displays an HTML file that you
specify. The help window is owned by the window you specify. As an o w n e
d window, a help window automatically stays on top of its owner and c l o s
e s when the owner is closed.
PowerBuilder's ShowHelp function calls the HtmlHelp API, supplying the
handle to the window which will be the owner of the Help window. So either
PFC's message router manages to confuse PBVM about the active window or you
are using a build which has this functionality broken and it does not have
anything to do with PFC.

Anyway, problem solved...Just needed to add the Windows API calls for
FindWindow and SendMessage I noted earlier, then in the pfc_close event of
our appmanager add this:

ulong lul_handle
long ll_ret
string ls_wname

//Help File Window Title
// Be sure to use the exact title of the window
// you are trying to close
ls_wname = "xxx Help"

//Get the Window Name
lul_handle = FindWindowA(0, ls_wname)

//Close the Window
ll_ret = SendMessageA(lul_handle, 16, 0, 0)

Works great, less filling...I'm happy..:-)..Like I said I did this cause I"m
using PFC..Non-PFC apps probably don't need to do what I did..

Something else now, but still related to the subject:

When you have accessed Help and close the Help window, then the help file
still stays (opened) locked by the application. Does anyone have any ideas
about why PB keeps the help file opened?
Our help-writers are getting annoyed by this becos they have to close the
application completely before they can generate a new helpfile. Keeping the
application open while writing (and testing) the help is more convenient for
them.

Thanks,

Ben

PS: We're using PB8.0.2 (PFC) and Robohelp chm-files.

Ben,

Why do they need the application to test their help? It can just be
compiled and tested right in RoboHelp. We have several people doing help
docs and development, so I set a folder on our network drive with our last
approved help file. That way those of us doing development don't interfere
with those making changes to the online help and those changing the help
file aren't interrrupted by the developers.

Hi Evita,

I see your point but i don't think it will do any good; as long as PB (the
application) keeps the helpfile *file-locked* they cannot overwrite it, even
if they would synchronise (copy) it from the generation, the copy generates
a "cannot overwrite - sharing voilation" error. When the PB-application is
closed, then the lock is released and the help.chm can be overwritten.

In order to create context-sensitive help the program checks which object
(datawindow) has the focus and sends the object_id (system repository) as
the map_id to the help (or topic_id if you like). People which are building
the helpfile like to keep the application open alongside the robohelp
application and rebuild the helpfile now and then.

Ben,

Ok...Guess y'all help file is more complicated than ours. Our client want
access to the whole help and not separated by topic so our help brings up
everything..We don't map topics.
