Can anyone help me? I have a datawindow which has a column the can contain
up to 255 characters. If I check the autosize height box in the column
object properties and in the detail band to provide room for multiple lines
it works fine. My question is how do I eliminate the extra space for rows
that have less characters?

Turn on AutoSizeHeight for the detail band as well, and size the band to the
minimum possible height (since autosize on the band can increase the height
but not reduce it).

I have tried that before, but it does work. It still leave blank space for
each inserted row.

Then there must be an object somewhere that is occupying that space. It
might be an invisible object, as this property is ignored when autosizing.

AutosizeHeight will increase a row's / object's height, but will never
decrease it. Make your column about 4 PBU high and turn on AutosizeHeight.
Do the same for your detail band. Your display, then, should only be as tall
as it needs to be for each row.
