Hi all,
Is there any way in Sybase to read the text of the hidden sored
procedure?

Hi Raju,

If you take a look at the source of sp_hidetext
($SYBASE/scripts/installmaster) you'll see that the entries in syscomments
are removed. They aren't encryted. Since ASE only needs the query plan and
not the actual text, this is okay.

So... you can't retrieve the sql text if sp_hidetext was run.

Well... I recall some remarks being made on this issue during past
ISUG conferences... What happens is that 'syscomments' has a hidden
column which you cannot access through SQL (just like 'syslogs' has).
This column actually contains the encrypted SQL source text as created
by 'sp_hidetext'. I think you can actually see the contents of this
column using "dbcc page", but as it's encrypted, there's not much use.
The basic idea behind doing this was that when upgrading to newer
version of ASE (from 11.9 to 12.0 for example), compiled objects could
be automatically re-created by the server from their SQL text. This
would require that the server decrypt the encrypted code (AFAIK,
there's no user interface for this at all, so you can't try to do it
yourself). Associated with this functionality is the remark (somewhere
in the docs) that you shouldn't delete the syscomments text anymore
starting from 11.5.
I don't know if this decrypt-then-recreate functionality is actually
implemented in current versions such as ASE 12.0, but this was the
basic idea at the time.

HTH,

Rob
