How can I erase or compress the transcation log of the database in order
to free up the spaces of the Sybase Server?? I'm using Sybase Server
11.5.

Thx,

Ming

Hi Ming,

You need to dump the transaction log "dump tran <dbname> to <device>".
Take a look in the System Administrator's Guide (http://sybooks.sybase.com)
under Backup Strategies

hope this helps
Jason

No. If you want to save the log (so it could ba applied to a previous full
database dump)
you would need to provide a valid dump device. If you just want to dispose of
the log
records, use "DUMP TRAN <dbname> WITH TRUNCATE_ONLY"

Hi Ming,

If you want to shrink the size of the database by taking
space from the log segments, see my writeup on how to shrink a database at
http://www.oconnell.net/Sybase_FAQ/Q2.13.html

I think yr solutions are not suitable for my case. I use a database, let say 'main',
which stores data and log. But, how can I shrink the size of log in this database or can
I use another device to store the log and then delete the original log from 'main? It's
urgent, pls give me hands!!!!

Thanks,

Ming

if you just need to move log from one place to another, try sybase mirroring.

No. I want to free up more space from original database due to the log is too large.

Rather than the toing and froing of posts without any clear indication
of what is exactly required, I think it would help in understanding exactly
what you want if you were to post the output of sp_helpdb for your database
as it looks now. Make some effort to format this so that it looks legible
and then add what you'd like it to look like after any changes. This should
then make it clear enough to any respondents that you won't get incorrect
replies.
