Please make sure the Sybase environment variable is set correctly."

Anyone encounter this error message when doing a Dsedit? I have tried
everything - tinkering with the config utility, uninstalling,
reinstalling, rebooting, editing my autoexec.bat file, etc, etc...I am
at my wits end! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

Check the "LANG" and the "LC_ALL" environmental variables on your system.
They should be set to something that matches what you have available in your
"c:\sybase\locales\locales.dat". Look in the [win32s] section:

[win32s]
locale = enu, us_english, iso_1
locale = fra, french, iso_1
locale = deu, german, iso_1
locale = rus, russian, cp1251
locale = esp, spanish, iso_1
locale = hun, us_english, cp1250
locale = ell, us_english, cp1253
locale = heb, us_english, cp1255
locale = ara, us_english, cp1256
locale = trk, us_english, cp1254
locale = jpn, japanese, sjis
locale = chs, chinese, eucgb
locale = cht, tchinese, big5
; locale = kor, korean, eucksc
locale = us_english.utf8, us_english, utf8
locale = default, us_english, iso_1

So if you "set LANG=X" and try to run dsedit, you will get the error
you are currently seeing. If you "set LANG=enu", you should resolve
the error.

If you do not set "LANG" or "LC_ALL", it will use the "locale=default"
option which should also resolve the error.

Search your PC for a file called "sybinit.err". Edit this file for more
detailed error information.

Sybase says the solution is to remove the LANG system environmental
variable but it was not in my system. I removed the LC_ALL and then
successfully opened Dsedit.

I found that installing certain DB2 Connect components adds an environment
variable called LC_ALL. The value is EN_US. While that variable exists
the get the error you describe.

As soon as I delete that value, the problem goes away. If I add it back,
the problem re-appears. I don't even need to reboot, just examine the
env variables.

I don't know what this setting does, maybe point to language files?

Hope this helps.. Please let me know...

Make sure your client has Open Client installed, if Sybase System 11
ODBC,
you need Open Client 11.1.1 installed - if you think it is installed
verify connectivity by
using ISQL to connect to ASE
