Hello,

Just trying out Adaptive Server 11.5.1 for NT. After installing, the
instructions state I should check out the installation by connecting.
When I do so, I get the following message:

"Client Message: Layer 5, Origin 3, Severity 5, Number 4
ct_connect(): network packet layer: internal net library error: Net-Lib
protocol driver call to connect two endpoints failed."

What did I do wrong? Where in all the documentation do I find the
background on this problem?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Not looking for just the
answer to this, but some guidance on the process for determining the
problem.

Regards,

Jack

Jack,

This is a very general message which simply means the server could not be
found on the network.

When you connect (for example using isql), the client end uses either a
server name you specify or whatever the environment variable DSQUERY is set
to, and looks up that name in the file %SYBASE%\ini\sql.ini. If you inspect
that file you will find your server name inside square brackets.
Immediately following is various connection information. This will normally
specify either a named pipe connection (NLMSNMP) or a standard ip
connection (NLWNSCK), together with the host name and maybe a port address.
The client then goes looking on the network for a machine that is listening
either on that named pipe or on that host/port number. If it can't find
anything, it returns the message you are seeing.

So the most likely reason is that your server is not running or not
listening on the port the client is expecting (or there is no physical
network connection between the two).

Jack -

Stupid question! Is the database up and running when you try to connect?
Is this error coming from the client?
