my co-worker asked Sybase tech support if he could do this in Sybase and
they told him no:

SELECT b.employee_id, b.employee_name, b.region, b.area, b.dept,
a.manager_name, c.manager_id
FROM hc_employee_web LEFT JOIN (hc_employee_hr LEFT JOIN hc_manager_hr)

My question is: why not?

In addition to Eric's input ...

Why didn't your co-worker ask Sybase TS "why not", i.e., ask the person
who told you you can't?

As you may be able to tell from Eric's post ... this *is* doable with a
particular version of Sybase ... maybe your co-worker is running a
different (older) version of Sybase?

Chuck,

I'm surprised support said this can't be done. ANSI join syntax is supported
in ASE 12.0. Of course you'll need some ON clauses.
