I'm doing my dump and load to create my new production server
(which is a nice new NT server with a fresh, new install of ASE
12.0 -- the current production machine is running ASE 11.9.2
[NT]). OK, I'm getting this message from my successful load:

Caution: You have set up this database to include space on disk
2 for both data and the transaction log. This can make
recovery impossible if that disk fails.

Caution: You have set up this database to include space on disk 3
for both data and the transaction log. This can make recovery
impossible if that disk fails.

Caution: You have set up this database to include space on disk
25 for both data and the transaction log. This can make recovery

I know I need to move the log to a different device
(segmentation). Can someone give me the steps to do this? I've
never done the segmentation process before.

Thanks!

Chuck

Actually, I was able to resolve my problem by moving the log to a new
device.

With the (as usual) excellent help of Sybase tech support, I:

* Dumped the log to truncate it
* Altered the database onto a new device
* Executed sp_logdevice to make that device a log device

Of course, I *would* still like to know how to do segmentation, so if you
feel like enlightening a young DBA (me), by all means I would love to know.

Take care,

Chuck Boyce

Hi Chuck,

Take a look at sp_extendsegment, sp_logdevice, sp_dropsegment. Basically,
extend the logsegment to the device you want it to go to, issue sp_logdevice
to move future log activity to that device, issue a few transactions to fill
up the remaining log page on the old segment, dump the log, drop the
logsegment from the old device. As Bullwinkle would say... "Presto!"
