i am new to sybase.
we are running the nt version that comes with the intershop enterprise
edition.
we would like the data files to reside on a novell server that is
accessed by the nt.
do i need to purchase a novell specific version of sybase to do this?

No, but watch out for performance issues. The database server access the disks frequently, and doing across a network can be painful.

Also watch out that the file server may cache disk writes, leading to data corruption in the event of a crash!

No!

You do not want to try this ... All Sybase devices should reside on local
disks...

Disks are cheap... why wouldn't you want the devices locally?
