How do I view the errorlog without shutting the server down? This is
ASE for NT 11.5.1.1.

I want to study the "print deadlock information" diagnostics while the
production server is running, without inconveniencing ALL the users by
shutting the darn thing down.

Breck,

It is in %sybase%/install/errorlog or %sybase/ase-12_0/install/errorlog and
is a textfile, and you don't have to shut down the server to view it. i
don't know why you are doing that. So, you don't need to inconvenience
anyone.

If I use wordpad, for example, it tells me the file is in use.

What do YOU USE to view it? That's my question. This is ASE 11.5.1.1
for NT, not 12.

use notepad. wordpad tries to lock the file exclusively, notepad doesn't

Or just copy the file first, and then open the copy.

Wordpad won't work but Notepad will - it doesn't care if the file is being
used.

If you don't want to view the log in real time then I have the easiest way
to do this is to simply copy the errorlog and then view the copied file. If
you want to see new messages as they are appended then i think that you can
find a 'tail' utility in the NT Resource Kit similar to the one you're
probably familiar with in UNIX.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, thanks, copying does the trick... for some reason I thought I
was getting the same "file is in use" message from Explorer... maybe
only when the server was actually *writing* to it, who knows.

It does seem strange that this critical file is not available through
Sybase Central, but that's for another discussion.

Again, thanks!

I forgot to mention that copying the errorlog everytime you want to view it
is very inefficient (from post by John). from NT, use notepad.

open it with notepad, or create a shortcut to the important errorlogs on
your desktop for easy access. remember, not wordpad.
