Hi All

Can you recommend how much memory to allocate to Sybase 12 on an NT machine
with 256MB? I know the minimum setting calls for 45MB

Thanks

Please do not post the same message in more than one newsgroup. Your posting in the
general newsgroup has been removed.

If ASE is the only process running on the box then you should be able to go up to about 200
megabytes of RAM for it. How large is your database? Given how cheap RAM is these days I
would install at least 500 megabytes of RAM.

Thanks for the reply!

Unfortunately we cannot add more RAM. There are three other processes
running on that machine. The DB has about 150-300MB of data. Is there a
graph that shows how much performance increases by increasing the RAM
allocation?

I'm not aware of any such graph. It would be hard to put something like that together
since each database is so different. Given the other processes on your machine you'll have
to lower the amount of RAM that is allocated to the ASE cache. 200 is probably way too
much. 150 megabytes may still be too much if other processes are starved for RAM or the
ASE memory gets paged to disk. But if you can allocate 150 megabytes then that should be a
very good amount.
