I printed off the Sybase document on configuring ActiveSync to allow desktop
apps to connect to ASA database running on the device. I have not been able
to get this to work. The document is kind of vague.

Step 5 reads:
Start the ASA server on the CE device. Either use the server startup dialog,
or create a shortcut.

How do you do that? If someone could provide examples of connecting to the
"ASA 8.0 Sample" database I would appreciate it.

My newsreader blocks all attachments so if you could show it within the
reply it would be better.

Thanks,
Roland

Roland,

To see the server startup dialog, use File Explorer on the device and
navigate to \Program Files\Sybase\ASA, or wherever you installed ASA. Then
click on dbsrv8, and you should see the dialog.

I'm not sure of the "proper" way to start the server using a shortcut, but
here's what I did:
1) In File Explorer, tap-and-hold dbsrv8 in your ASA folder on the device.
Select "Create Shortcut"
2) Using Windows Explorer, copy the shortcut to your desktop computer. Open
it using notepad, or another ASCII (NOT Unicode) editor. If your device
doesn't support "direct" copy and paste, the file will probably reside in a
hidden folder on your desktop like C:\winnt\temp\_PegEx~1
3) Add on the command line options given by the Tech Doc at
http://www.sybase.com/detail?id=1025441. SAVE THE SHORTCUT AS AN ASCII (aka
ANSI) TEXT FILE. (everything else in CE is Unicode, but not the .lnk files!
Weird)
4) Using Windows Explorer, copy the revised shortcut back to the device.
5) From File Explorer on the device, click the shortcut, and it should start
the server.

HTH,
Bharat
