I have a problem that my PPB program is freezing sometimes on my PocketPC
(Symbol PPT 2800). After a soft reboot I loose all my software and have to
install all the programs again. I did the following steps:

- connect the PocketPC to the desktop PC
- start the PPB program
- turn off the PocketPC
- turn off the desktop PC
- turn on the desktop PC (the Pocket PC is still connected to the desktop
PC)
- when the desktop PC is running the Pocket PC is turn on automaticly and
shows the PPB program
- when I click on the screen of Pocket PC nothings happen, the buttons did
not work also
- after a soft reboot all the programms and settings are gone, I have to
calibrate the screen, set the land settings, etc.

I could reproduce the problem a few times but not all the times. It seems
something to do with the PPB application because I tried several times the
same steps without starting the PPB program without any problems.
The supplier could not help me. He had never heard about a problem like
this.

Did somebody else having freezing problems with PPB programs? Any idea what
to do?

Regards

Hans

Hans;

I have been through the Alpha and Beta programs. My PPB applications have
randomly frozen numerous times due to either my coding error or problems
with the PKVM run time. I have done a soft-boot many times and never lost
PPB or my application. So I would hazard a guess that it might be your
Symbol PPT 2800 device. I am using a Dell Axim X5.

By the way, just rolling out a production PPB application now with a 3.8M
database (40+ tables) and lots of PPB code. The application is "rock" solid.

Yeow - we've never seen something that catastrophic here in
development and QA.
We test with Toshiba, HP, and Dell but I've never heard
of the "Symbol"...

...hmmmmmmm...
If you turn off your PocketPC and turn it back on when
_not_ connected to the desktop PC are things all OK ??

Does your application connect to any system DLLs through
external function calls? (like winsock or special hardware or....)
...hmmmmmmm...

I'm still stumped... I guess we'll have to figure out how
to get a "Symbol PPT 2800" here for development...

I've just googled the device -
Oh yes - the industrial people...
Nice little device - PPC-2002...
YEOW - $1500 ($2100 for WiFi !)

Still - I intensely dislike such nasty crashes...

Please post here whether it fails when _not_ connected to
the desktop PC when turned on.
And whether your application is accessing anything
through external function calls...

For that money, Symbol should be addressing the problem!

Thanks for reply everbody!

- I can turn off and on the PPC without problems. The problem occurs only
when the workstation is connected to the PPC and both are turned off and the
workstation is turned on.

- The program is very simple and did not use 'strange' dll's. (only the dll
of the sample 'extC_SalesDB.dll') And we use the Mobilink synchronization
program of Sybase and ASA8.

The program was tested on a iPAQ first, that works very well (never had a
freezing program or loosing the program). But the iPAQ is not robust enough
so we bought the Symbol (this PPC is including a scanner that we like to use
in the future). And this PPC gives the problems.

I think we have to talk to ower supplier again.... it seems to be a hardware
problem.

The 'positive' side of these problems: I created a installation program in
Wise so that the user can setup the program himself again when the program
is gone. Till now I had to manualy install PPB, Sybase and a few files at
different places on the PPC, that takes a lot off work and could only done
by somebody who did have the knowhow. Now, everybody can install the
program on a PPC. ;-)

I hope somebody else who have experience with Symbol could give some
feedback.

Greetings

Hans

Well its a very scary thought if PPB and Symbol are not going well together,
The industry we cater to strongly relies on Symbol products as they have
integrated ruggedized devices with barcode scanners and magnetic swipe
readers for their field technicians. I think this issue would need to be
resolved as quickly as possible. We have ordered Symbol PDT 8056 device to
test our application
http://www.symbol.com/products/mobile_computers/kb_pdt8037_8056.html ; now
its an expensive device and if it would not cater our application it would
be big disappointment.

Mohit;

Our shop is planning on using Symbol products as well and would like to know
the outcome...if any.
Is there anyway I can follow up on this to check the status of your test?

Thanks,
Austin

Sure Austin,

We are hoping we'll get the product within next couple of weeks; I'll keep
you posted, also I am hoping people in PPB development group are considering
testing their product on Symbol PDT Devices.

Best Wishes

Austin I must point out that the device you have selected comes with
Microsoft Windows CE 4.1; and to the best of my knowledge PPB applications
are not compatible with Windows CE 4.1 you need Pocket PC 2002 or Above for
your PPB applications to function.

Corrections Anyone ?

Best Wishes

Mohit;
Thank you for the clearification. Good thing we haven't ordered them yet!
:)
Will PPB support CE4.1 in the coming up releases?
Maybe 1.01? (or whatever)

I don't see that happening; Although it seems they kept a window open for CE
4.2 release but again you wanna make sure before you make such an
investment. I would still consider Pocket PC OS as your safest bet.

All the Best

Windows CE.Net 4.1 is a very obsolete version. (see other threads)

From an earlier post (not by me)....
-----------------------------------------
The "Windows CE.NET" is essentially a different operating system than
"Pocket PC".

Also, MS didn't even release a development SDK for this software (4.1)
so we did not test with it. It seems to not be backwards compatible,
so Pocket PowerBuilder does not support it at this time. We do
however
work with .NET 4.2 which is being widely promoted as part of Windows
Mobile 2003 (formerly Pocket PC 2003), so I suggest people with 4.1
devices upgrade to 4.2 if they can.

Reed;
Please correct me if I am wrong in understanding....

I can buy a Symbol device with Windows CE.Next 4.1 but will need to upgrade
to 4.2 for PPB?
I REALLY want a symbol device (barcode scanning capabilities).

Thanks,
Austin

Just some clarification on Windows CE and Pocket PC. Windows CE is the base
operating system on which the Pocket PC platform is built. So a Pocket PC
device is BOTH Windows CE and Pocket PC.

Now, the most common version of Windows CE is version 3.0 on which Pocket PC
2000 and Pocket PC 2002 is built. Windows CE 4.1 came out in the fall, but
was not used by many Pocket PC device manufacturers. Some devices do use CE
4.1, but they usually are not Pocket PC devices.

Now Windows Mobile 2003 (Pocket PC 2003) has come out and is built on top of
Windows CE 4.2. And LOTS of devices are coming out with this operating
system.

Pocket PowerBuilder has had some testing on Windows Mobile 2003 (running CE
4.2) and things look to work ok. In our release this fall we will be adding
more support for this operating system. As for CE 4.1, I don't expect that
we will spend a lot of time working with it since there are so few Pocket PC
devices running it.

I try various time and metods but devices with Microsoft Windows CE 4.1 are
really NOT compatible with PPB,
i find that only ASA 8.0.2 ( but only the build that comes with PPB beta
106 ) runs ok ( if you select ADO .NET in installation ). So i consider
Pocket PC OS HP 5450 with socketSCAN.

This is something I want to address once I return from TechWave, but
before everybody gets too excited, remember the conditions....

But - yes, I'm still concerned too...
(and this is only for Symbol devices???)

Reed;

No problem on my Dell Axim or Toshiba in this regard. I think it is the

I could not reproduce....
Tried a handful of times, but no luck...

Environment -
Desktop:
Win-2K Pro
Device:
Symbol PPT-8800 (15 button)
PPC-2003
Serial connection to desktop

I even simply soft-reset a few times with the PPB app running and
things were still OK.

Soooo - I'm still puzzled...

Hi Reed

I am happy to hear this. I received another PPT8800 from Symbol and that one
works fine till now. So, I think it was a monday-product or something like
that.

Cheers

Hans
