I'm new with databases and I thought I posted this a few
hours ago. I cannot find anything in the readme file (or
elsewhere) as to the proper procedure for a Netware
installation of the sixty day trial Ianywhere. I have
downloaded the online books ver 8.02 but it is of little
help. I don't have a sample NCF file to work with either.

Trying to hack through with a Sybase 7 NCF file which I
edited for 8 "load VOL1:\asany\dbsrv8.nlm -n TEST
Vol1:\asany\ASADEMO.db -x tcpip" I get a "Please confirm
your acceptance of these licence terms:" message with no
idea as to how to agree with them.

We are currently using Sybase 5 on acouple applications as
well as version 7 on one other server. Version 5 will not
work on Novell5.1 with service pack 6 in a pure IP
environment, and Sybase doesn't support 5 anymore. We are
trying to get rid of ipx/spx as a protocol.

Additionally I want to be able to migrate the Sybase 5
database to Sybase 8. How do I get started, can anyone help
me?

I look forward to a solution to this problem. I apologize
if this is already posted elsewhere.

I haven't ran the Netware eval. recently but typically with
character mode consoles you need to type a Y for yes
at prompts like that . . . (look at the bottom for a suggestion
like (y/N"). If you can do this outside of an NCF, directly
on the console then there may be a NW5 NCF barrier I am
not seeing.

As with SA 5, you need to install an administrator's
set of utilities on a Win32 machine someplace. Unlike
SA 5, that is not automatically installed for you, you will
need to run the Windows installer against the machine
you want to use (for upgrades, and testing).

Of course, once you install your Windows s\w you
can do all your testing off that platform and 'deploy'
the results to Netware for final testing.

Once you have an administrator setup going, I
recommend rebuilding your database at version
8. That can be done most easily with dbunload -an
or dbunload -ar (the latter being important if replication
is involved). If that works without any problems, it is a
one time, one step operation that should get you started
as cleanly as possible.

Except for the ASA 8 new features, much of this should
be exactly the same things you would have done for ASA 7
... so don't lose heart (people have and are doing so with
production software).

Thank you very much Nick, I entered a "Y" and the test
DBcame up, although I never saw the question. Is this
entering a "Y" because it's "Trial" software? If so that's
OK, but not in a production environment.

The DB that needs to be converted is version 5, I hope that
does not make a difference. I am blessed with the fact that
I can make a copy of this small DB and if I mess it up, I
can make another one. I'm sure not going to practice on the
live one.
Again, thank you, ans have a nice weekend.

It is due to trial software.

BTW You posted the question in the sybase.public.sqlanywhere.general group.

I installed the Sa 802 win32 eval on my win2000 pro PC. How
do I install an "Administrators set of utilities" so that I
can do a "dbunload" against the version 5 database file?

Thanks again,

Andy

You run the windows installation. The main setup.exe should do that.

Thank you Nick,
Perhaps I didn't explain what my database experience is. I
have never used SQL before and I need specific instructions
as to how to get started. If this is beyond the scope of
your help maybe you could recommend a tutorial. This is
what I have done so far:
1. Installed the Netware version on an NW5.1 file server.
2. Loaded SA 802 win32 on my PC.
3. Copied the DB files of an old DB to the
sybase\SQLanywhere8\ folder.
What I want to do is to convert Sybase 5 to Sybase 8 DB
files and migrate them back to a Novell server.
I don't have a clue as to how to get sybase 8 working with
these sybase 5 DB files. I really need detailed
instructions.
My main responsibility is the operation of a LAN, so I have
limited time to experiment.

I will be very thankful for any help you can give me.

Andy,

You should probably also be talking to the authors/vendors of your
applications then and seeing if they can help you out.

I can tell you how to convert the database easily enough [see below]
but you are likely going to need assistance making everything work.

By trying to go to ASA 8 you just blew past 2 major releases of
the product entirely and jumped into a 3rd major release. Almost
every major feature and every major API and standard has be affected
by this to some degree or another, so some compatibility issues will
typically pop up and unless you have implicit knowledge about the
applications' code and design of the database schema then you may
not be able to address those.

> > What I want to do is to convert Sybase 5 to Sybase 8 DB files

Since you have that file **copy** on the PC, open up a command prompt
(command.com or cmd.com) and run

dbunload -an <newfile.db> -c "UID=dba;PWD=sql;DBF=<yourfile.db>"

where you provide the correct UID and PWD for a DBA account, and
substitute in the full pathname for your existing **COPY** into
<yourfile.db>
and provide a target name (path optional) for you output file into
<newfile.db>

If there are no corruptions or problems with that SA 5 file that should run
to
completion. When done test it out on your Windows system running
dbeng8 <yourfile.db> .... or dbsrv8 <yourfile.db> and connecting to it
(Sybase Central is a good starting point). After which it is yours to play
with.

By the way there is no need to run this on your production Netware server;
you can (and always could) just run it on Windows leaving your production
server intact.

Thank you Nick. I ran the dbunload against the file and
ended up a "*********SQL error: table name syscolumns is
ambiguous" At this point I have decided that I will contact
the vender who originally set this DB up for us.

Again, I want to thank you for your help and your patience
on this. It is my ultimate goal to be a DBA, afterall,
Netware is pretty dead despite the fact it's an excellent
network OS.
