I have a database running on a server (Ver 8.0.1) that I
cannot connect to any more. The size of database is 60Meg.

This symptom occurred while I was running a batch java
program that inserts a PDF into a table with a long binary
column. (This program has worked successfully for a couple
of months)

I have run dbvalid from the command line on the server and
everything is ok. I was able to back up that database.

When I try to connect to the database with sybase central at
the server nothing happens.

I have not restarted the database server because I have
users testing an application which runs on Tomcat. The
connections that Tomcat has in its pool are working.

How can dbvalid and dbbackup connect, but sybase central and
and jconnect not connect?

Also, since I am using 2 columns in the database with BLOBs,
is there a recommend pagesize. I am using 4096K.

Any help is appreciated.
Regards
Dennis

Show us the command lines for dbvalid and dbbackup that connect OK,
plus the connection options for Sybase Central that do not connect.

When you say "nothing happens", is it really "nothing" or is there
some error message or other symptom?

Can you connect via dbisql with -c "ENG=xxx;DBN=xxx;UID=xxx;PWD=xxx"?

Can you start the sample database and connect to that via Sybase
Central?

4K is the recommended page size unless you have very special
requirements. The first 254 bytes of each blob value is stored with
the base row page, any bytes past that are stored in separate pages in
an area called the "blob arena" or "extension pages" so they don't
affect queries that don't select the blob columns.
