PocketBuilder 1.0 does not have OLE support.
That was one of the things we had to leave out to
make the DLL fit.
The scanner's we've tested simply leave the scanned data
in the entryfield that has focus.

What pocket pc device are you using and which scanner interface are you
We have come across many scanning products and they all provide an SDk with
Activex control or OLE to enable scanning functionality
in the application. If we create an external DLL compiled using C to call
all scanner library's would it be compatible with PPC environment ?
That functionality is available with all pocket pc development tools (EVB,
EVC, MobileBuilder, Codewarrior etc.) why is PPB lagging behind in that area
I think it is because PPB just needed to get the basics up and running
solid first. PPB's 1.0 strength is the ASA DBMS (small footprint), MobiLink,
DataWindow Technology and PB's 4GL (OOP) ease of programming. I think OLE
(or some parts of it) will be there in release 1.2+ (from TechWave
I would expect a very aggressive development cycle to continue by Sybase to
makes sure that PPB catches up to the market leaders in good time.

Well I agree that Pocket Powerbuilder is a good product but if you are
developing an application for Handheld device
scanner interface is a basic necessity. I am sure you will agree with me
when i say 90% or more application in the market today
on handheld devices need scanning or will need scanning in the future to
make work simple.
We also chose PPB to create an application which involves scanning and
barcoding , without scanning our application will be
of no use, is there any other solution to this at this point of time
I have a production Airport Management (AIRMAN Mobile) application up and
running as of August 12th at JFK Airport. We are also scheduled to install
this in Hamilton (Ontario), Miami and Ft Lauderdale airports in September.
This does not require any scanning. So it just depends on the application's
requirements. I think PPB 1.0 was perfect for this.
I agree 100% though with your emphasis on scanning (and I also think
printing - i.e. like a small receipt) should be Sybase's immediate focus!
Hopefully, like IBM was 3rd into the computer market, you do not have to be
first into the game to rise to the top!

Ravi, just because PPB doesn't yet support ActiveX doesn't mean you
can't find scanner software that won't work with PPB. Take a look at
http://www.tec-it.com/barcode/go/ad_bcsoftware.htm as an example of a
utility that provides a DLL you can use with Pocket PB. ActiveX and
OLE are not the only possible solutions for Pocket PCs.

Suggestion: How about setting up a PB and PPB resource web page on
CodeXchange that allows developers to quickly cross reference 3rd party
products that other current developers have used and are recommending?
Food 4 Thought!
Thanks .. Chris
I went to the Web site, but I only could find "native" Windows support,
nothing for WinCE.

Have you tried this one?
