We are looking into potential performance enhancement projects.

If you have any comments/suggestions on the performance of
any of the following let me know.

* drop database
* load database
* create clustered index
* create non clustered index

Thanks
- Arun

To me a big improvement would be to be able to dump a database then load it
into another
server where the devices and segment do not have to be identical to work
correctly

Just what do you mean by "work correctly"? You can currently
load a database regardless of the layout as long as the destination
is at least as large as the source and it will load and be perfectly
usable. How would you like it to work?

I suspect that Alan means that he doesn't want the load to "rearrange" the
data and log fragments. It's quite irritating to make a database with the
data and logs placed separately on different disks, etc. and then the load
places the data & logs helter skelter. Not great for performance either.

If it isn't his wish then it's mine.

In 12.5.1 we now have feature called mount/unmounting database. This lets
you copy a database
and mount it on another server while the original copy remains on the same
server.

One "issue" that I have had to deal with is that creating a clustered
index locks the whole table for the duration. It also acquires
exclusive locks on some system tables for a very long period, I think
while the non-clustered indexes are being rebuilt. Being able to build
a clustered index while other processes are accessing a table would be
desirable.

Hello,

Can Sybase look into creating a reorg that can be used while
all database
activity is occurring and for all types of tables that would
function as
below.

Example)
REORG ONLINE TABLE (When I say table this would be any type
of table
allpages and data only)

1) Create a transaction to hold the primary truncation
point.
2) Build a copy of the table using only shared level locking
on whatever
segment that table exists on applying whatever
reorganization
charecteristics that are specified. That is, max rows per
page, expected
row size, reserve page gap, etc.
3) Create the indexes on the table created in step 2
applying whatever
space charecteristics that are specified or stored in the
catalog.
4) HOLD EXCLUSIVE LOCK on original table. Apply any changes
that have
occurred to the table from the transaction log.
5) Change the sysindexes first, root, ioampg, doampg space
properties to
point to the new objects that were created.
6) Commit the transaction.

In addition, allow for remap specification for reorg
command.

Example)
REORG REBUILD TABLE
REMAP TABLE TO SEG001
REMAP TABLE.IX1 TO SEG002
REMAP TABLE.IX2 TO SEG003
etc

Thanks,
Ryan Putnam

How about an ability to configure and store statistics for all composite
more than the leading column at creation time. e.g. CREATE INDEX
ncnui_table1_1 ON table1 (col1, col2 col3) [ WITH STATISTICS USING 1000
VALUES [ ON { (col1, col2, ...) | ALL COLUMNS } ] ]
and/or
exec sp_dboption "allow composite index statistics on create index/re-org",
{ true | false }
where: this option is false by default in all databases except a tempdb.

Currently this is a two step process (Create + Update Index stats) and
particularly for temp tables that usually outweighs the gains. The current
behaviour of leading column statistics only should be preserved for a no
surprises approach.

Ability to specify an index to be persisted on a select/into target could
have some value as it has the potential to reduce the total IO cost and
potentially duration over the two step approach.

Grant Queenin

Grant,

This has been requested before. I'll take this to the optimizer group. I don't
see a reason why this couldn't be done.

Are you a member of ISUG? If so, please add this to the feature requests there.

I'll post any response to this that I get.

Later,

Eric
