Dear team,

We found a good potential site to sell our PocketPB.

The H/W S/W are following.

PocketPowerbuilder 1.01 (Build 212)
Chipset : ARM SA1110 with 62.89 MB

A PDA from Symbol (PPT 2800) with a barcode scanner
OS : Pocket PC Ver 3.0.11171(Build 11178)

We have one concern though...
How can one use the barcode scanner in the device with PocketPB?

It seems that we need to create a external DLL from the given Symbol lib,
then
include this DLL into PocketPowerbuilder. Does it sound right?

Also, Symbol also provides an ActiveX dll (mainly used for Emb Visual
Basic).
Is there any known way to use this ActiveX in PocketPB?

We need a prompt reply.

Thank you

Please take a look at the sample code on CodeXchange
(http://pocketpb.codexchange.sybase.com/servlets/ProjectDocumentList?folderID=443)

For Reed's example of how to use the Symbol Scanner with Pocket
PowerBuilder.

You need to be a member of the Sybase Developer Network to access
CodeXchange. You can sign up for free at www.sybase.com/sdn.

I already have a sample posted on CodeExchange.
This is for the Symbol PPT-8800 scanner, but I believe
other people have made the same code work for the 2800.
Look under the "Special hardware" folder:

http://pocketpb.codexchange.sybase.com/servlets/ProjectDocumentList?folderID=443

Hope this helps,
Reed Shilts

For Symbol 8800, I just installed the ScanWedge driver from Sybase and put
in in device's startup.
This was all I needed to input data from the bar code scanner into my PkB
application (in edit fields).
It is true that some bar formats are not supported (we haven't tryed it that
hard yet) while the CodeXchange application works just fine. Am I missing
something?

If you use the technique in the CodeXchange sample, there is no
need for the ScanWedge driver AND you can retrieve the data
into type of data field, not just the edit field with focus.
Also, the sample had control over the trigger (software or using
the hardware button) along with things like enabling various
decoders.

A bit more flexible than the ScanWedge.

Reed,

I am trying to re-create your functionality inside of my own application,
but it doesnt seem the automatic "ue_scan_triggered" event is getting called
by pbm_commnotify. Therefore, I have to "Force Read" after a scan in order
to see the data. All of the scanning is supposed to operate all of the time
in my application, so I cannot have the user pressing buttons before or
after scans. Any idea how I can resolve this?

John,
Ahhhhhh - it sounds like a simple window handle issue....
The "ue_scan_triggered" event is a custom event which
is based on the event ID "pbm_commnotify" (an obsolete
windows message I'm reusing).
Make sure that the message sink window handle
matches the visual control the "ue_scan_triggered" event is on.
You'll see the "f_read_asynch" passes a "handle(this)".
Make sure this is the correct control.

Sorry if what I've said is confusing, I have been trying to implement either
of your examples with no success on re-creation as far as the automatic
display of data is concerned. Both examples end at the same point. After
"Start" is initiated, the scanner scans, and grabs data, but then does not
process it, I have to use Force Read every time to grab the data. I am
using your "user object' example however because it is much better for
inclusion into a different project.

In your revised example, where you use a user object instead of just a
window, I dont see any place in the window where the pbm_commnotify is used.
But in that example, I actually see the handle(this) statement being called.
I have tried several different objects in replacement of "this" but still no
luck. I am still stuck with having to press force-read to gather data and
so far that just isn't working.

I dont understand why your example deploys and builds without problems yet
when I use all the same events/methods/code in my own window it does not
work. Any more information that could possibly help would be appreciated.

Mboangher,

How difficult was it to set this up and use this in PPB? I only need to be
able to read 3of9 and PDF417 Barcode formats. I need to get my barcode
scanner working in my app asap.

Sory for the delay.

As mentioned before, it is just that easy: just install the ScanWedge
driver.
[Put it inside the StartUp to start it automatically every time you start up
your device. ]
This will assure bar-code input in the edit field that has the focus just by
pressing the specific hardware button. That's all.

But, as previously mentioned on this thread, this approach will not allow
you to retrieve data in other fields, and you have to take care of the
focus.

Thanks for the reply. I have since been able to implement Reed's example
and am moving from there. It was just a matter of getting the eventIDs to
work correctly. Thanks for the information! I'm sure all of these replies
will help new developers in the future.
