Hello,

A quick question. Is it technically possible to have a pocket PB
application read/write data directly to SQL Server ?

If so, can anyone point me to some documentation or FAQ
on how to do this ?

Thanks in advance

You have to use a linked table in ASA to read and write to MS SQL.

Is this a limitation of the PocketPC or PocketPB ?

Thanks.

Sybase can answer this better, but the short answer is competitors support
their own databases.

Pocket PowerBuilder has drivers to connect to ASA. This may soon change but
for now they can only connect to ASA remotely. When I was working with MS
Visual Studio you could only connect to MS SQL remotely.

Using iAnywhere database you can sync directly with MS SQL database.

A limitation of Pocket PB that should be addressed in the PPB 2.0
release.

I am interested in the same type of functionality. I have a Sybase SQL
Anywhere 8.0 database running on a laptop, and want to get data scanned into
pocketpowerbuilder from a barcode reader into that database. How could I go
about doing this?

John,

SQL Anywhere's ODBC driver allows you to connect directly to a server
machine. There are many posts about it in this newsgroup. Essentially you
have to work with the DSN file to specify the correct server IP address.

Dave,

Are you trying to connect to SQL Server, or SQL Server CE??? These are two
very different questions. From what I read, I thought you were trying to
connect directly to SQL Server, not running on the device, but on a server
machine. If this is the case, the limitation is not Pocket PowerBuilder,
but rather the drivers for the server database. From what I know, SQL
Server doesn't have a driver that allows for direct server communication
from Pocket PC (although I could be wrong).

If you were indeed asking about the latter, as Dave Fish understood, then he
is correct, and we will be working on support for SQL Server CE (local on
the device) in version 2.0
