I have just installed a "Local" copy of AdvantageDB.
I setup an "ads.ini" in C:/Windows specifying ADS_SERVER_TYPE=1
(copied it from a Knowledge Base article).

I was able to start ARC.exe and define a local database and table.
The tool allowed me to enter one row into the table.

However, when I clicked on the "SQL" icon, a "Native SQL(1)" window was
displayed. I attempted to issue "select * from testtable1". (the dummy
table I created). The program prompted me for the password for ADSSYS.
I supplied the correct password. However, the only response I receive
is the "Error 6420" message. I have tried all three connetion types
(Alias, Path, and Dictionary.) The "Dictionary" field is populated with
the correct value. I have read some of the articles concerning "6420",
but I can not find one which addresses this issue. Any help is appreciated.

there are addictional server settings in the SQL window. Look at the
button with the hammer/screwdriver/wrench in the SQL window itself.

Larry,

Just as an FYI, the reason the setting in the ads.ini did not work is
because the ServerType setting in ads.ini is only used if the Advantage
application does not programmatically specify the ServerType. The Data
Architect does programmatically specify it (based upon what is specified in
that query options dialog you set), so the ServerType specfied in ads.ini
will be ignored.
