We have problem with database connections over dial up -telephone
connection
(RAS) from one computer to another computer. Database is ASA 8.0.
We need send data from central database to database in an remote office.
For connecting computers we use dial up and on remote computer microsoft
"incoming connection" in dial up and networkong. OS is windows 2000.
This connection vork very good.
Remote computer is local and have not in local network.
Problem is that when database server on remote computer is starting first
than
dial up telephon connection and can not listening tcp/ip adress when central
computer (database) wont to make connection with remote computer.
TCP/IP adres is define in "incoming connection" in Network and Dial-up
Connection.
When we put down database server ASA 8 on remote computer and again start
then he read TCP/IP adres and of dial-up connection and connection put
across.

we have no find way that we over dial-up (telephon line) make connection on
remote computer and send data because remote database can not at first start
read IP adress define in properties of incoming connection.

I will be very under obligation if somebody can give mi idea how solve
problem
relatively how make that server wheen first time start listen and IP adress
for example 169.254.64.50
----
Here is example :

Starting TCP listener on IP address 0.0.0.0:2638
Starting on port 2638
Starting UDP listener on IP address 127.0.0.1:2638
This is a class A network address
Looking for server with name dbspira
Sending broadcast to find server
Using broadcast address of: 127.255.255.255:2638
Server not found (no reply received)
TCPIP link started successfully

Now accepting requests
-----
When incomin connection becom active PPP adres assigned for connection
become 169.254.64.50

How that server also be assigned on this adress without shut down (put down)
and
again restart asa

Thank You very much
Damir

Dial-up networking really only works well when the RAS gateway is
working on the 'server' side. As such it works best with remote
tcp/ip clients and not servers.

The behavior you are describing is quite normal and expected.
The ASA server has no idea what address should work, since
no network has been established.

About the only way to work around I can think of is to use fixed IP
addresses for that remote that will be recognized as a routable
address. Of course this would need to match the RAS assigned
address ranges so configuration there will likely be required to
match.

Alternatively, running the client application (running at the corporate
site network now) from the remote machine should also work.

Dear Nick

You think is possible to make replication over telephon line
connection over incoming connection in win 2000, ASA.
when try to assign fix IP adress for remote mashine. Wether
them ASA on remote computer recognized this Fixed IP ? Wether them be
possible that aplication from central computer deliver connection
with remote database on computer who have defined "incoming connection"
and fixed ip.

We work with power builder.

If by 'replication', you mean SQL Remote, then that is in fact
one way of doing this. MANY sites use SQL Remote with
dial up. If you are not doing this already, a SQL Remote
deployment takes some planning and design time but may
be worth looking into [I was going to mention it before but
I didn't want to confuse the issue.]

As to how to set up a fixed IP solution, you'll need to talk to
your IT or network experts. If the remote machine has
been preconfigured with a fixed IP address, then that is
no different from what you may be using today [as far
as dbsrv8 is concerned]. The only difference is that
the address may become available on the other side
your RAS gateway. This is definitely not a typical
set up for any one, but it may be one that **may be**
possible to make work. But if not, there is nothing in
the ASA product that could allow dbsrv8 to 'guess'
what address to use.
