Tree view items are stored and referenced with handles (LONG datatype).
Therefore, the technical limitation is approximately 2 billion items.
However, there are practicle limits in creating and navigating the tree.
Also, physical limits in hardware, particularly memory, would likely be
encountered. And of course, human limits will kick in pretty quickly and
would limit the usefulness of a treeview if it gets overly complex.

I would recommend a tree design that only populates the navigated branches
and prunes the tree as the branch is collapsed.
