Not to take anything away from Philip, but keep in mind that
many of the TeamSybase members answer questions in multiple
product areas. So even if you don't recognize their names
from the Powerbuilder related forums, dont' assume they're
(we? - I guess I could include myself) dead weight.<g>

Philip Salgannik 138
WS[myself] 150+ [of which atleast half are good [i guess?] but,
atleast i tried and PARTICIPATED and CONTRIBUTED]

PS: Iam interested ONLY in Powerbuilder, but doing a search on
group:sybase.public.* author:"lastname" also gave out ALMOST same results.

My point is a waring need to be given to those with ZERO on thier count and
REMOVE them from teamsybase membership and give that place to more
PARTICIPATING ASPIRANTS.

note: above numbers may not be EXACT but you get an idea of who is good and
who is not.....

By the way, in my review, I gave my fav people as
Terry voth and bruce armstring[!!!!!!] and wish them all the best to be
MVP2004.

Your query is giving bad data. For example, Breck Carter has answer more
that 0 questions in the ASA groups (my count shows 3660 for
sybase.pulbic.sqlanywhere.general). I doubt that Terry Dykstra has only
contributed 71 times. I did a query from OE and got 2106 hits for Terry in
just the sybase.public.powerbuilder.general group. And Bruce Armstrong has
3499 hits in that group.

Not all of the TeamSybase members support powerbuilder. You'd be better
off doing sybase.public.* You'll find that Breck probably has more
posts than I do.

Also, Google groups counts (speaking from experience) can be misleading
(particularly if they're not archiving all of the Sybase groups). We
have out own utility internally for tracking the message counts that
works directly off the newsgroup server.

And, for what it's worth, message count is only one of the selection
criteria:

http://www.teamsybase.com/whatis.html

The 'tough love' approach can actually work against membership.

Or to translate, if you want to practice the 'tough love'
(although I wouldn't really call mine that - it's more "Call
a spade a spade") approach, then forget about TeamSybase
membership. To each it's own.

Just to add to what Bruce has said, I've identified problems with
author counts from Google Groups, and before that when it was
DejaNews. The problems range from ridiculously understated to
ridiculously overstated, both inside and outside the sybase.* and
powersoft.* newsgroups. I passed along my observations way back, but
there wasn't much reaction, and I wasn't too surprised. Frankly, I
don't think they'd lose money if their numbers were wrong, so by
definition of capitalism, they shouldn't care. <g> Also don't forget
that Google Groups has had big gaps (**months**) in its history,
including starting last summer when the newsgroups changed names.

Lastly, don't forget that these are people with real jobs too. (The
theory is that people with practical experience, given the right
resources, will do better helping fellow users.) Like most of us, they
all have pressure times in their projects and personal lives. Sybase
lets Team members take a "leave of absence" in cases when times like
this become extended. Unlike some organizations, Sybase doesn't toss
people out at the first sign of trouble. <g> With most of these
people, if you look back over the *years* with accurate numbers, you
are more likely to be telling them to "get a life." <g> Of course, the
same may be said of you and Phil. <beg>

Good luck,

Terry [TeamSybase] and Sequel the flourescent-tanned techno-kitten

them as my gurus.

As per
http://www.teamsybase.com/whatis.html
to be a teamsybase member you must follow these 3 guidelines.[correct me if
iam wrong]

1. required to log on to the newsgroups five days a week
>what if they could not log for more than 6 months?

2. spend as much time as possible [max 1 hour] on newsgroup-related work
each of those days when the number of messages warrants it.
>what if they cant spend time and if no of messages < 100 for 6 months?

3. people get noticed because they are acting as if they are already members
>once became a member and if forgot to 'act' like a member, will the
membership revoked? if so on what circumstances? has it ever been done so
far for anyone?
or is it like, once a member, you are there for lifetime? if the number 29 a
fixed number [or a cap] ?

4. Is there anything like participating member or honorary member who need
not be actively involved in newsgroups? I could not find 6 names anywhere in
newsgroups [dont want to name them :) ]

thanks for clarifications

regards

WS

I believe that Terry already addressed that.

See above.

Yes, it can be revoked. So far we've only had one member who was asked
to leave, and it wasn't for failing to keep up their message count.
We've also had many more that the current 30 or so members (though never
more than about 30 at a time). For the most part, when people stop
posting long term its because they've moved on to other adventures, and
then end up retiring their membership voluntarily. There were 15 (or
so) folks that were original charter members 10+ years ago, and there's
8 (or so) of us that are still around. The others have moved on.

Yes. Actually I believe Breck in particular may have already achieved
that, but decided to get involved again anyway.

There's no fixed limit on the Team (in fact, the number used to be
higher). The population is based on what Sybase perceives as the need
in the newsgroups at the time. If Sybase IQ takes off and becomes the
most popular thing since Lotus 1-2-3, and the IQ newsgroups become
swamped, they'd probably add a bunch of Sybase IQ experts to the Team.
Since the Team is pretty PB heavy because of its Powersoft origins,
they probably wouldn't be looking to add PB people unless the PB
traffic really took off.

No, membership is not for life. People have retired when they felt
they could no longer sustain the commitment. And, yes, people have
been retired. And, no, I won't be going into the details in a public
forum or with anyone who doesn't need to know. <g> The rest of the
"what ifs" are at Sybase's discretion.

And, as I already said, Team members can take a leave of absence.
However, looking at the database we keep internally (remember, Google
has a **big** gap), I don't see six people missing. Of the people I
*do* see missing, I know one is working for Sybase traveling and
promoting PowerBuilder and another is heading up the open source
effort for Watcom C, running newsgroups on another server. All may not
be as you presume. <g>

Good luck,

Terry [TeamSybase] and Sequel the techno-kitten

Well I, for one, can vouch for Breck Carter (ASA) and Mike Nicewarner
(PowerDesigner) in non-PB forums. They are both invaluable in their areas
of expertise. And it is TeamSYBASE, not TeamPowerBuilder.

I can also vouch for Jim Egan's involvement in the PowerDesigner forum
(certainly more than 2).

And for Steve Katz in this forum (if nothing else, he replied to you in this
thread, so how he gets a count of zero I don't know).

I have missed Simon Caldwell in the PB forums though - he was a great help
when I was first venturing into the world of PB. I hope to see him around
the PB newsgroups again sometime. [Said without prejudicing his TeamSybase
position since I have no idea what he has been doing as a TeamSybase
member - I have just noticed his absence from the PB forums].

I am also wondering why you (WS) care so much about it? If a person on the
list hasn't helped you, don't vote for them.

My opinion: Even if they aren't all extremely active in my areas of
interest, I think that it is just nice to know that Sybase and some
interested people have come up with a setup to ensure some degree of
participation in the newsgroups by knowledgeable folk - people who can tell
it like it is, without fear about their employment with Sybase (since they
have none). I don't take what they say as gospel, sometimes they are even
wrong [GASP!] - but their ideas and experience are very welcome (along with
people like Phillip who provide a lot of valuable information from outside
the TeamSybase setup). The fact that everyone does it in addition to their
work and home lives is another reason to be thankful for their involvement.

And your statement

> note: above numbers may not be EXACT but you get an idea of who is good
and who is not.....

is wrong. The number of posts says nothing of how helpful a TeamSybase
member is, or about the way they offer that help (efficiency, accuracy,
politeness [no, not a dig Phillip <g>], etc). One person could take 3 posts
to get across the information, while another might take only 1 post to get
across the same information. The latter should not lose out for being
efficient or more accurate. And then how do we count Terry Voth's history,
future and troubleshooting site? [fantastic work, thanks Terry]. It is
referenced by other posters, in which case he doesn't have to post, but it
is still help that he is offering as a TeamSybase member.

I know of a famous quote about statistics and lies that is probably
appropriate here.

This all started with thought of why cant people like Phillip are not part
of teamsybase if there are 30 people on the list whom I could see only a few
on these forums...[Thanks to Bruce & Terry for clarifications see below]

Fair enough.

Your question has been asked before in these forums - quite rightly given
Phillip's involvement here. However, from what I have read, Phillip isn't
part of TeamSybase because TeamSybase has some requirements that Phillip
does not want to sign up to (they would tend to curb his "tough love"
tendencies) - and TeamSybase knows that Phillip wouldn't be able to help
himself!

No complaints here. Gives us the best of both worlds ("tender love" and
"tough love")!

Cheers

Andrew

I agree with Roy ,
Phillip is always there for support and answering lots of quries , But not a
member of Team Sybase.

Phillip , that's a great job you are doing with great interest .
