Hi:

On asa 7.0.4.3498

I am getting connected to 3 database in a single server on windows 2000
server and the app. crashes.
dbsys, dbwf1 and dbwf2 are then dbs i am getting connected to. This is the
command I up the server

dbsrv7 -n wfdbserver -gx101 -gn101 -zr sql -zo "c:\temp\daa.log" -c
112m -gd all dbsys dbwf1 dbwf2

If more than one instance tries to get connected. The database goes down.
I've been debugging to see where it breaks but its pretty inconsistent to
arrive at a conclusion. Am I missing anything please point me. The two
things where I suspect (just my guess) that 1. Using of proxy table between
the databases 2. Stored Procedure using an external dll to read the
registery. Could this be a problem.
The following are the distributable files I am using right now.

asa.cvf
dbbackup.exe
dbcis.dll
dbcon7.dll
dbctrs7.dll
dbctrs7.ini
dbextf.dll
dbextf50.dll
dbextf6.dll
dbipx7.dll
dbisql.exe
dbisqlc.exe
dbjava7.dll
dblgen7.dll
dblib7.dll
dblocate.exe
dbmem.vxd
dbodbc7.dll
dbodtr.dll
dboledb7.dll
dboledba7.dll
dbping.exe
dbserv7.dll
dbspawn.exe
dbsrv7.exe
dbstop.exe
dbtool7.exe
dbwtsp.dll
libsybbr.dll
libunic.dll
sqlactnm.h
util_db.ini

Thanks in adv.

Have you checked the server output for an assertion?

I did not get any assertion.

I got this error once, thats it & not again. EODBC: [Sybase][Adaptive Server
Anywhere]Integrity constraint voilation. Primary key for table
'SYSCAPABILITY' is not unique.

I wrote this program which in multiple thread gets multiple connection to
the database. It works fine on my pc which is a win2000 prof. If I run the
same program in the Win2000 Server, then it crashes with message
"Communication Faliure/cannot connect to database/database server not
running"

Please advice.

The "cannot connect ..." message would be from the client side. Try running
the server with the -z and -o <filename> switches to capture any error
messages that the server is reporting. If there are no server error messages
captured, is there a Dr. Watson log produced?

Or, are you simply unable to connect? This would be a much different
scenario from the server crashing when you application creates a second or
third connection.

dbsrv7 -n wfdbserver -gx101 -gn101 -zr sql -zo "c:\temp\daa.log" -c
112m -gd all dbsys dbwf1 dbwf2

I did run with the -zo option and I have attached the daa.log file. I do not
see anything that should be of a concern, except to your expert eye, if any.

There was no Dr.Watson error. The database simply went down and other
threads (apps) that tried to connect to the app gave the "could not connect
to server" error message that I mentioned.

If I run just one instance or one thread then things are fine, everything
works as expected. If its more than one then such things happen, that too,
things are random. 10% of the times two instance get connected but rest of
the time they don't.

Please assist.

Hi Dan,
The -zr output that you posted shows clean disconnects at the end of the
log. No problem is shown here.

The -zr output is not the same as the -z output. One possible
explanation is that the database is configured to shutdown when the last
connection disconnects. The -zr output (which you posted) shows the
statements received by the engine, but it does not show the engine startup
or shut down messages. For that you need the -z output.

OS : Windows 2000 Server 5.00.2159 SP4 (2 processors)

ASA: 7.0.4.3498 (running dbsrv7.exe)

In one single instance of dbsrv is accessing 3 databases DBSYS, DBAPP1 &
DBAPP2

From my research, two things were causing the server to crash,

1. Few stored procedures were calling some methods from a dll (written by us
in Delphi), so that we can get information from the registry in a SP.

2. Stored Procedure calls made from DBAPP1 to a proxy table (actual table in
DBSYS).

I eliminated both the methodologies and now things are working fine. I don't
know if this is a known issue or issue not aware. I am certain this is an
issue. Since I found the exact issues, we now have a work around. With
respect to ASA, it is still an open question.

Thanks: DAN
