I am new to PowerBuilder, here is my "issue":

A friend of mine and I are working on this of-the-shelf application,
possibly written in PowerBuilder 7. We have the source codes, but I
suspected it is missing some files, something like a workspace file, or
target file. There are .pbd, .pbl, .pbr, .dll, .dwp, and .exe files. We need
to migrate it to a Web Application. Any suggestion?

I did a little research, it seems there is this Appeon that might help, but
it needs PowerBuilder 8.04...

Any suggestion how we can approach this? Or our only way out is to rewrite
the whole application in web?

Thanks,

LW

Hi LW

The workspace and target files were introduced with PB8, so the fact that
you don't have these files for a PB7 application is expected and is no
problem.

Appeon might be worth considering (I'll leave it to more Appeon-literate
people to tell you about that) but, since you will need PB8.0.4 or above,
you need to know that all these files do is group targets (the workspace
file does that) and libraries/PBLs (the target file does that) so you don't
really need the originals, ie you can create new ones. A problem will
obviously arise if you don't have all the required PBLs, but that would
happen if missing source code for any application. There might also be an
issue as to the order that the PBLs need to appear in the target file - it
might take you some trial and error to determine if there is any required
ordering.

I would suggest the following before making any moves to the web:

1. If you don't already have PB, get PB9 (this is the latest version so you
get the most modern technology currently implemented). That said, PB10 has
been tentatively mentioned for release before the middle of 2004 so,
depending on your timeframe, you might like to factor that in to your
thinking.

2. Get the application working, without web interface, through whatever
version of PB you decide to use.

3. Get an understanding of it (from a user perspective - what does it do -
and a programmer/architect perspective - how is it structured/programmed).

Throughout all this, learn PB as much as you can.

Then start taking account of any guidance that you get for moving to Appeon.

Hope that is of some help.

Cheers

Hi LW,

Appeon has success stories on migrating applications that are built in lower PB
versions (PB 6/6.5/7) onto the Web.

Similar to what Andrew suggested: Appeon engineer (1) first upgrades the
application to PowerBuilder 8.0.4 by opening the code in PowerBuilder 8.0.4 and
saving it; (2) makes some code changes till the full build of the application in
PowerBuilder 8.0.4 is successful; (3) deploys the application with Appeon
Developer.

As stated in Appeon documentation, Appeon 2.7 is not certified for supporting
PowerBuilder 9. You may get a PowerBuilder 9 application deployed with Appeon
but it is not guaranteed that the application will be error-free. Appeon
recommends you use PowerBuilder 8.0.4 for now, and will support PowerBuilder 9
and PowerBuilder 10 very soon.

After you successfully upgrade the application to PowerBuilder 8.0.4, if you
have any issue with using Appeon, please just post a message or send me an
email. Appeon engineers will be very glad to help out.

Julie Jiang

There were no such things as workspaces and targets in PB7.
Those were introduced in PB8.

As to moving PB to the web, there are a number of options -
and which one you choose depends on a lot of factors.

You can:

1) Rewrite the entire application in Java/J2EE
2) Refactor code into components that can be deployed into
EAServer (seamlessly) or through a JNI/PBNI bridge on any
other app server. The GUI can be standard J2EE with an MVC
architecture and .jsps and standard tag libs etc...
3) Use the HTMLDW to get html representations of your
datawindows including insert, update, delete capability.
4) Appeon
5) I'm sure there are other variations.

I see, so since I just installed the evaluation PB8, I won't be able to see
the codes written in PB7 (the actual version is 7.0.3.10312)

We are actually going to meet with our client sometime soon, to present a
way to convert the existing PB7 application to a web application, of course,
it depends on how soon the client wants the web application to be up ad
running.

I gathered pbl is the library file, what is pbd, and pbr?

Thanks so much for the quick reply.

Correct PBl is the library filel that holds the source code.

PBD - PowerBuilder Dynamic library. Similar to DLL but only accessable toPB
apps.

PBR - PowerBuilder Resource file. File holding names and paths to resources that
change dynamincaly at runtime in the applciation.

If you try to "open" the PB7 app in PB8, PowerBuilder will start a
"migration" process. Since the process is not easily reversible, make
sure you back up before you start.

If you want to just "see" the code without changing it, without
migrating, or even having PowerBuilder, you can use PBL Peeper (see
below).

Good luck,

The fastest way, IMO, is to run the app on Citrix Metaframe; however, this may
not be the best solution depending on your requirements.

LiWen:

Here is how you can determine what version of PB your app was created in.
Open any .pbl file in Notepad. Search for the word "datawindow", without the
quotes. If one isn't found, open another until you find one. Once you get a
hit, just look prior to that hit and you should see the version of PB.

Ummm. Are you talking about the "release" line in the datawindow code?
This isn't updated on migration, only on saving of the datawindow, so
I can find "release 5" in my datawindows in PB9 PBLs. Maybe I'm
missing what you're intending.

Good luck,

A large part of your answer needs to be dependent on what you (or your
customer) defines as a "web application." By some definitions, it's OK
to be transferring large quantities of DLLs, ActiveX, JavaScript,
etc.. to the client's PC. By other definitions, if it can't run in a
4.x browser and can't load in 2 seconds over a 56K line, then it's not
a web application. Of course, as you move along the line between these
two extremes, different options, providing different functionalities,
come and go. The more you move to the thin pipe/universal browser only
approach, the more you will have to think redesign and/or rewrite, as
a lot of the code and even concepts won't convert (e.g. window menus,
popup menus, treeviews, etc...). Right now for PowerBuilder, the thick
pipe approach with the least amount of rewrite is probably the Appeon
approach. Moving down the line, you have the Window ActiveX and the
Datawindow ActiveX. The thin pipe/PB option uses the HTML Datawindow,
integrating into pages you'll have to build.

Early on is probably a good time to remind the client that they will
have to move from a free distribution cost model to a server licensing
model for most options.

Good luck,

Terry [TeamSybase] and Sequel the techno-kitten
