Hi,

We have a Sybase ASA 7 database that receives heavy
transactions. We do an online backup every half an hour and
truncate the log file. The problem is that when th dbbackup
is running all transactions are stopped and the users sit
there waiting. This usually lasts about 10-15 seconds
(while dbbackup is running). Is there a way to keep the
transactions going when backing up? If we were to increase
the backup to every hour it would be a 30 second delay. I
am wondering how we can prevent this delay. Are we
employing the right approach for backup ?

Thanks,
Phil

Have a look at "live backup" in the Help. It's a little strange
setup-wise but if you're interested I can post some material from the
book (which is V9 specific but probably applies to V7).

Why do you backup so frequently? We take a full backup/truncate once a day, and haven't had a problem with that
approach in over 6 years. We schedule the backup to occur at 1am, when there's little (or no) activity happening.

DBBackup shouldn't stop transactions from running. If you are truncating or
renaming and restarting the log file then in 7.x dbbackup did have to wait
until there were no active transactions before it could restart the log
file. This would not normally make other connections wait, rather it would
mean that dbbackup could wait a long time until there was a 'quiescent'
point at which it could complete the backup, close out the old log file and
start a new log file.

FYI - As of 8.x, transactions can span log files so dbbackup no longer needs
to wait for that quiescent state to truncate and restart a log file.

To check that other transactions are really waiting on dbbackup, you can
look at the sa_conn_info() output in ISQL. This will show if other
connections are blocked on the dbbackup connection.

If you aren't using -x or -r on your dbbackup command line then dbbackup
should not have to wait for a quiescent point (even with 7.x and below) to
complete.
